Do any of you suffer from a herniated discs? I just found out that I have one on my right side. I have to see an orthopedic specialist. What is the usual plan of action? I will do some research online but I thought I would ask some of you for personal stories. Thanks. Sincerely, Dawn Post-op 9/23/04 399/248/200 Pre-op BMI-69 Current BMI-45

Dawn, My husband had one. They gave him Vicodin (not a good thing) and physical therapy. I think it depends on how severe it is. What helped him the most was seeing a chiropractor. Take care.

I have a herniated disc (disk? LOL I never know) ... at C5,C6. I have been seeing a chiropractor, which has helped IMMENSELY. I have learned a lot lately about these things... I didn't realize that they could actually GET better (which I'm grateful for!) ~ as long as they don't rupture. I would not go for any "invasive" treatments until exhausting the other things like ice, rest, and chiropractic. I would not go for steroid injections, surgery, et****il everything else was tried first. Good luck ... and sorry to hear of your struggle!

Hi Dawn, Have had back problems the last 15 years, culminating in 1 ruptured disc (removed by surgery in 2001), 2 subsequent herniated and another ruptured disc since then (I'm not, repeat NOT, going back to back surgery if I can help it). Avoid having back surgery if you can. Do physical therapy, find a pain-management clinic (they can do wonders), stay on your feet if you can and keep moving, get into water-therapy. I didn't do all that originally, and have ended up with "failed back syndrome" ... which is bascally I have a crap lower spine with crap back muscles to match. Now I do water-exercises, go to pain-management clinic, and, on bad days, medicate (hate to do it, but it's necessary sometimes) and alternate heat- and cold-therapy. My pain-management physician prescribed lidocaine patches for me to wear and they've helped a lot with my muscle-pain. They make some lesser strength ones now that are OTC, and you might give those a try as an alternative to meds. I wish you all the best ... back pain can take over your whole world, and it can become relentless. Myra
