Hi Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I will soon be off for the second part of my sleep study to figure out which machine and how much oxygen I need at night. My question is has anyone been told they have a fatty liver and did you have to lose weight before surgery to reduce the size?? If you were required to lose weight what did you do?? TIA Anita

Hi Anita, Most everyone has who is obese does have a fatty liver. When the surgeon goes in to do the surgery often times the liver is in the way. So they will ask the patient to lose some weight. The liver is one of the first places you actually lose weight when you start, so that's why they will recommend it. It will make things easier on you. I would suggest something like Atkins or South Beach diet. I did Atkins for 2 months and lost 50 pounds. Good luck to you. Amy

Anita, My doctor puts all her patients on a 7 day clear liquid diet just prior to surgery. She says this reduces the size of the liver. Basically, all you could have is sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles, broth, water, EAS Carb Advantage protein drinks. It wasn't easy, but, it worked. Just be sure to be completely off caffeine well before you try the clear liquid diet. You don't need to be fighting caffeine withdrawals at the same time. Lori 384/323.5/170

Thanks Amy for your response. I've been doing a restrictive diet for almost a week now and am just not sure if I'm losing yet or not. It will probably take a little longer to notice I guess. Anita

Thanks Lori, I just bought some more protein last night and I got the EAS Vanilla. I'm wondering if in a couple of weeks if I haven't lost anything if I should contact my nutritionist and maybe go on the all liquid diet for a while?? Well enjoy the rest of your weekend. Anita

Hi Anita, I was not told that I had a Fatty Liver, but I was told that I needed to lose 15lbs before surgery to reduce the size of my liver. Although, I gained 10lbs(I was cursed, not sure how I gained) in the process of losing, and now I have to lose 30lbs, thats 25 for the surgeon and 5 for me But like the other post said, we all have larger livers due to our size and the liver has to compensate for our larger sizes and grow larger. My surgeon required me to see the nutritionist every week to help me lose the weight, and she has been a great help. She put me on a 1200 calorie diet, and on paper it sounded like a lot of food, but on the plate....but it is working for me because I have lost 14lbs in 2 weeks....I think most of it is H2O. Hang in there.....You can make it... See you on the losing side Nissah The F.AT Slayer 360/346/???/18 24 days 2 go........woohoo

when I went for my consultation with my doctor said I would have to go on a liquid diet two weeks before the operation to shrink the liver in order to get inside to operate better. Well it helped because it only took 1hour 15 minuits to do it.

My surgeon puts everyone on the Phase 2(typically after surgery) diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery for this reason. The amounts of the foods are unlimited.
