Reasons to DRINK your WATER!
G'morning gals and guys ~
We read it ALL the time... "drink your water, up your water, get it in, get it in, get it in"
One of the BEST things (to me) about being TRUE to my H20 is that I KNEW it was a sure fired way to FLUSH those fat cells out of my body. Figured if drinking 100 ounces a day would help with my overall weight loss, why not?
I rec'd the following in an email yesterday. It's a list of additional reasons why we (yep, all of us, even those that do NOT have weight loss surgery) SHOULD drink their H20.
DRINK UP - friends!
* One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University study.
* Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
* Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
* A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or
* Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?
Hugs - Lei
Good for you Sandra!!!!
Ive always had the mindset that "getting in my liquids" was such an EASY thing to do (as far as getting healthy and taking off the weight) that I'd be really SILLY not to put extra effort into it.
LOL - uh, no EXERCISING? Well, that's a whole 'nother beast!!!
Btw - Im the same way, I keep mine in a 32 ounce water bottle and make sure I get at least THREE of those a day. So much easier tracking THREE servings vs the "x" amount of 8 oz glasses they always talk about.

lol Lei, this is SO true-i have a doctor friend in miami (ok, he'd like to be MORE than friends, but i'm married, lol) who took issue with my water intake (185 oz a day). he insisted that was WAY too much water and i should immediately cut down to about 100 oz-ok, i did 125 oz for 4-5 days, and not only was i so dehyrated my intestines set up like concrete...i STOPPED LOSING WEIGHT! to make matters worse, now that i've been back on 185 oz a day for 2-3 days, i can tell i have a UTI and i'm retaining about 1.5 lbs of water-thanks a LOT, doc! shows you what a dermatologist knows about wls...LMAO! and don't think i don't intend to tell him that!
Hugs,
Donya
-164 lbs
Good for you DONYA!!
Im sure your Doctor Friends heart was in the right place, but NO one knows our bodies (and their signals) better then US. It's up to us to actually pay attn and listen, when it's signaling, that's the part that most people overlook.
Ive heard that there is a definite and real concern about OVERwatering our bodies, flushing out all the 'good stuff' we need to keep it functioning, shutting down the kidneys, etc. BUT, that's gonna require BARRELS and barrels of water, not 100 oz or a 180 oz, Im surprised he was warning you to back down.
lol...ME? I woulda been applauding you for a job well done!
Hello Shelley ~
NOT a dumb question at all - I used to wonder about it too and this is what I found out through the last several years of asking and researching.
I hope you don't mind - but Im going to cut and paste my reply below from another post that I JUST answered (on another board) about the same thing. LOL, it's not that Im completely lazy, honest, I just don't have a lotta time that I can spend on the boards today.
Have a great day - my reply is below - hugs, Lei
:::::::::: CUT AND PASTE / H20 REPOST BELOW :::::::::::::
As far as the water, the rule of thumb Ive always heard, read, etc, was that ANY type of liquids count towards the H20 requirements as long as it's not Caffeine laced (coffee, teas, soda, etc) or fruit juices (too much sugar and calories to justify the liquid content).
This is pretty much what the medical world and the health world tends to agree on (including my doc).
Now, that being said? I've always done just good ol' PURE H20. Not because I like the taste of it, it's purty bland, ya know? But because I don't like ANY of the flavored waters out there. The fruit flavored H20's and Propels, are supposed to be very good, but I find that they either are way to SWEET or way to DILUTED. Figure if it's gonna taste like water - with a hint of fruit, then I'd prefer just good ol' water.
I won't do the Propels as a norm, although they taste pretty good if you dilute them a bit (too sweet for me) ....my problem with them? I absolutely HATE "drinking" my calories. I treat my daily calories like a "checking account" and I can't see myself spending any of the valuable 'food' calories on liquid calories. If that makes sense.
One more thing - keep in mind, when I drink 100 ounces of PURE H20 (any other liquid is up and above that, coffee, etc) ...it's because Im 2.5 years out and there is NO excuse for us NOT getting in our liquids this far out.
Well, yah there is .....it's called laziness.
But as an early post op (2,3,4,5 weeks out) - all I could do was all I could do. Most days, I was lucky to top 60 ounces and EVERY drop of liquid counted, including the liquid in my protein shakes. It's only now as a very long term post op that Im stricter on myself and force that 100 oz of pure H20 point.
yea at 3 weeks out I am doing every thing I can to get as much liq in me tea is my thing with sweet-n-low is my thing right now and I know I am not gettting all I need couse I dont drink a gal in a day that was what I would do before the WLS cant do it now and dont know why I guess its couse I dont gulp it any more
Hi everyone,
For myself, before surgery, I loved fruit flavored water and drank more actual water than I do now, but after surgery, my tastebuds just couldn't tolerate certain types of sweetness. I was concerned about whether or not I needed to be drinking water or if other low-calorie/sugar/caffeine drinks were acceptable, so I asked my surgeon yesterday what his take on the matter was. I told him I had been drinking mostly Crystal Light ****d tea is my thing now, and this variety has only a very small amount of caffeine). He said if it makes me drink more fluids then go for it, because getting the fluids is the most important thing. If I was forced to drink plain old water, I would have a difficult time of it, so this is a good alternative for me.

I'm about 3 weeks out and I find this is the most difficult thing for me.
It seems that it's always time to cut out drinking so I can have a meal, which of course is going to be when I WANT to drink.
I'm still finding my groove in this new lifestyle. I've found that if my water is colder than room temp but not fresh from the fridge, I enjoy it more.
