slow loss - depressed
Hi all
I like this web page. I feel like I can relate a little better. I am just so depressed. I had my surgery 12/27/04 and to date have lost only 65 pounds. To make matters worse I had gotten a scale that would weigh me at this weight and it has been wrong all along! I figured it out when I got on it and it showed a 6 pound loss, jumped off, jumped back on and had lost another 6 pounds. Wow, 12 pounds in 5 minutes! Anyway, I started at 375 and I am still 310. I was wondering if anyone else has had slow loss and is unable to do alot of exercise without having a heart attack. I know the more I lose the easier the exercise will get but I just feel this need to be better than I am. So because I am not doing "enough" I am not good enough. Same old story. I just have to do this one day at a time.

One day at a time is right, Tink.
You've lost 65 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure you've done it one day at a time.
I know it's frustrating to lose slower than others. My weight loss is good so far...but it comes in fits and starts. For instance, I gained 10 pounds of water weight last week, and it hasn't budged since. Every day, I think "today is the day I drop pounds." So far, that day hasn't come.
It's been two weeks tomorrow. I thought I'd be losing 10 pounds per week, not gaining!!!
I started out soooo slowly with exercise. I just walked up and down my street. Then a little further each day until now I can walk over 3 miles. I do still go very slowly compared to other people. But, then I tell myself that at least I'm moving now. Something I certainly didn't do pre-op. I also learned some "chair exercises" that I can do at work. I park further away, and I volunteer to walk across the hospital if someone needs paperwork on the other side of the building. Just those little things add up. I don't know if this helps.
If nothing else...let me give you a (((((((((((hug)))))))))))
I understand!

Tink,
Do you have a nutritionist that you work with? My surgeon has one that if the weight loss starts stalling or is too slow, she has us meet with this nutritionist. They want us to keep our daily food intake in fitday.com. Do you use this? I highly recommend it. It really helps you keep track to make sure you are getting in enough protein, plus keep an eye on what you are eating. Then when we meet with the nutritionist, we bring in 5 to 14 days (your choice) of printouts of our food log and she looks it over and makes suggestions. Maybe this will help?

Hi Tink,
Congratulations on the 65 lbs you have lost so far. I have to use a walker until I lose enough weight to be able to walk independently. Because my standing endurance is not that great either I have to do sit down work outs. One in particular I use is Sit Tight by Richard Simmons. It is a 25 minute sit down cardio workout that gets my heart pumping without causing stress on my knees. I tried walking with a cane the other day and found out that I am not ready to graduate yet. It does get depressing at times when we know in our heads what we want to accomplish ... but on our way to success we must remember to pay attention to what we have already accomplished and celebrate each moment. Doing so will help us see just how far we have come. Hang in there and I wish you continued success on your journey.

Tink:
I started out pre-surgery at 367- it is now 13 months later I have only
lost 90lbs. I have so muc more to lose, and yes moving is hard. All we
can do is the best we know how, and hopefully our bodies will respond
favorably. But- it goes to show that our metabolism probably sucked
before surgery and surgery likely isn't going to change that dynamic
one bit. But think of it this way...where would you have been if you
didn't have the surgery. I know its a year later I have lost almost
100lbs-...without the surgery I bet I would have gained at least
half that much.So I guess we have to be grateful for small things
and yes, take it one day at a time.
