Does anyone use Fitday.com?
Hi Everyone,
I am about 3 1/2 months post-op, and I'm just wondering... for those of you who use Fitday.com or keep track of your protein, fat, and carbohydrate daily intake, how does it break down for you? On an average day, I get about 50% of my calories from protein, 10-15% from fat, and 35-40% from carbohydrates. I never really used to keep track of fat and carbohydrates before I started using Fitday, only protein. I just tried not to overdo it on both of those. But then, since it breaks them down into daily percentages for you, I began to pay attention. I asked my dietician about what the breakdown should be; the only things I took from it were that I should be having between 600-800 calories/day (which I do), 60-80 grams of protein per day (not a problem), and that a person should have a minimum of 30 grams of fat per day (not getting that). I find it difficult to get more fat in without adding calories; I imagine I could cut a few carbs, but it still wouldn't increase my fat intake, and it would deprive me of the few treats that I can still fit in to my daily plan (i.e. sf popsicles and sf fudge bars). Carbs show up everywhere - in milk, cottage cheese, sugar-free drinks and popsicles, and even chewable vitamins. What is your breakdown, and what information have you gotten from dieticians or doctors on this subject? Or just in general, does anyone have anything to add? I'm really curious. Thanks, I appreciate your insights.

Tanja
Hi Tanja,
I too use fitday.com. I am almost 13 months out so my calories are much higher then yours. My nutritionist told me to get in no more then 1300 calories. 100g protein, no more then 40g fat and 150g carbs. I can eat quite a bit of food now, so it is hard sometimes to keep this strict. I dont eat anything with added sugar, and I try to stay away from white flour. I get a lot of carbs in because I love summer fruit. Normally, I just try to follow an Atkins like plan. I am not losing like I did, but I feel I can do this as a way of life, so it works for me. I eat a lot of cheese for the calcium, so that adds up the fat grams also. Last month my average calories were 1400 and came from protein 30% and carbs were 32%, and fat was 37%. You are doing a great job, keep it up, and soon you will be eating more, just remember we dont absorb fat so dont eliminate it from your diet, just limit it.
Hugs,
Sue
Hi Sue,
Thanks very much for the response. Your information is helpful. With limited calorie intake at this stage and the emphasis being placed on protein, it is difficult to get the recommended amounts of fat and carbohydrates in, but I can see how it would be possible to do this once I get further out and am eating more calories (like you are). It is important to find the balance between something that works for you and something that you can keep up as a way of life... that's why I don't want to give up SF popsicles just to cut carbs. I have been eating quite a bit of cheese too, but it has mostly been very low-fat or non-fat; I made a point to buy some with a little higher fat content that didn't have too many more calories so I could get a few more fat grams in. Thanks again!
Take Care,
Tanja
