Is morbid obesity and co-morbidities a "listing level impairment?" Dose anyone have any experience with the procedures, and if so whether or not State medi-cal will cover WLS? Frankly this feels like an all time low for me but I'm running out options.

I wouldnt say it is a true "listing level impairment" but if you are appearing before a judge for a hearing.... it is definitely put into consideration. The obesity and other impairments associated with it is a contributing factor with actual "listing level impairments". So, for instance, if you are obese and suffer from depression, and are also obese and have problems walking or doing normal activities this is a time when your obesity is put into consideration.... I hoped I answered what you are asking! And as to whther the state of California will apy for it... I would check the guidelines for dept. of social services, or whatever department issues the insurance in your state. In a search engine try: medicaid (or whatever it is called in Cali), california, your county, and gastric bypass... I wish you luck!!!!

I became eligible for Social Security Disability when my co-morbities caused me to not be able to perform my job responsibilities. (Daycare Administrator) Obesity alone will not qualify anyone for benefits. Once I qualified for SS I automatically became eligible for Medicaid and Medicare A. In Ohio I did not have to wait for approval for Medicare but I did have to wait for approval for Medicaid. This is how my surgery was paid for. Don't give up. Georgeann

Morbid obesity is not considered a "listing level impairment." Most of the problems we have are not. It is the combination of the problems we have and how they affect us that makes it equal to a "listing level impairment." It isn't the actual disabilty that matters as much as how the disability keeps you from working and functioning. I won my case in Nov. 2004 and I listed morbid obesity, back/knee/ankle/foot pain, depression and anxiety, breathing issues, hearing issues, and memory/concentration problems. I showed that I couldn't stand for more than 5 minutes, sit for more than 15-20 minutes in one position and had to lay down several times a day from the pain. The morbid obesity also made it very hard or impossible to do things like knel down or pick up something from the floor. I also can't walk 1/2 a block without having to stop and rest from the pain and from being out of breath. Depression makes it hard to get out of bed and get motivated to do anything because of the pain and difficulty moving. I can barely walk without getting out of breath and also breath very heavily even when just sitting. I also have a history of ear infections that take a long time to clear up and heal. During that time I have a very hard time hearing and understanding what people are saying. I also have trouble concentrating and remembering things. With all these issues what job can I do? So, concentrate more on how your disabilities keep you from doing the things necessary for daily living and working rather than the actual "listing impairment." Email me if you have more questions. -Maria
