How are you moving today?
Hello fellow SMO'ers
Just thought I'd give a friendly hello, introduce myself and ask, what are you doing to move today and everyday? My name is Mercy and I had my lap band placed on February 9, 2005. The band is doing exactly what I had hoped for. To date, I've lost 90lbs since surgery and 110lbs since January.
This post is to help us get motivated to move more. It doesn't matter whether we're pre-op, or post-op. It doesn't matter which surgery we want, or which surgery we've had. It's so important for us SMO's to get out and move to build stamina, and build muscle. Building muscle is so important, not only to increase our metabolism, but to keep our most important muscle healthy, our heart!
Now, at 435lbs last summer, just taking a shower every day was a workout for me. I'm not saying you have to get out and join a gym right now, but just start with the little things. If you tend to be a home body, make an extra trip somewhere just to get out. Go to a movie, go to a library, go see a soccer game (walking out to the field is exercise in itself). If you're out and about, park 2 spaces further than you would normally (notice how I don't tell you to park on the other side of the parking lot, even I don't do that yet... lol). Buy 2lbs weights at Target and do arm curls during the commercials of your favorite TV program. The idea is to just get moving.
I'm going to try and post a thread everyday and I'm hoping people will reply with what they're doing to move.
As for me, let me tell you, I am by no means a walker by any stretch of the imagination. Today my city was having a celebration rally for our WNBA World Champion Monarchs. I walked 3 city blocks, stood there for 45 minutes for the parade and ceremony, and walked back to my car. I survived... lol
What have you done to move today?

WOW Congrats on your loss!!!! I thought I was well educated on this surgery and I thought SMO's couldn't get "banded" and to be honest I didn't think it would work and LOOK at you!!!!
I am happy to "meet" you!!!
Moving around is a real challenge... I am a pre-op BMI 80
I think your idea is awesome! Very motivating post!!!
Thanks!
good morning, mercy:
i loved your post.
and your idea to share ideas on how to get moving.
i thought i was doing so well last week - finally got up to twenty minutes on the treadmill one day and then twenty on the bike the next day. BUT, that's all i got done. my ankle puffed up like a blowfish, completely stopping me from doing anymore of either.
so yesterday i started again. FIVE minutes on the treadmill.
i'm also parking a couple spaces further out from work.
and there's always SHOPPING. my most favorite form of walking. (i even try to remember to walk well - quickly, good posture, tummy sucked in), course that only lasts until i see my next sale - then all bets are off.
thanks again, mercy. it's always great to get ideas.

Mercy,
WELCOME!!! Wow! your post was a definite motivator. Today, instead of taking the shortest route to the fridge.........I will walk around the kitchen twice before opening the door
........I tend to hide my pain of being SMO with sarcasm............its just my way
.
Seriously, though, I will try to take that extra step today. youre so right about it being for our health.
Nice to meet you, Mercy
take care

Hello Mercy,
Nice of you to share your thoughts with the board. I have been trying to keep moving everyday in some form or another, but yesterday, I was sick with a bad cold and basically only made the trip from my bedroom to bathroom to kitchen, etc. I felt badly that I didn't feel up to doing more, and unfortunately, I feel the same again today. However, I am going to try to at least get the lawn mowed today... we'll see how it goes. I have been pretty faithful about exercising each day, and haven't been "out of commission" like this since right after surgery, so this is really hard on me. I actually feel guilty, but I suppose requiring a sick day here and there is bound to happen. It's just disrupting my routine - you know? Well, regardless, I am going to try to do something today, but maybe I'll go back to
for a little while first
.
Take Care,
Tanja
