Hi all, This is my first post, but I have been lurking around for awhile. I do not have a surgery date yet, but should have one by mid next week. I'm shooting for November 7th. I've been trying to prepare for post-op as much as possible. I'm 40 years old, weigh 450lbs and live alone in a single story house. My question is.....did all of you have recliners to sleep in post-op? I do not have one and was wondering if I should invest in one and if I do, should I invest in with with a lift? Any thoughts and suggestions is greatly appreciated. -Cathy

WELCOME Cathy!!!!!!!, Glad your not a "lurker" anymore! I already have a recliner(my husbands) and if i can get his body out of it, I will sleep there after WLS. I have read a lot of people can only sleep that way. Come back often, Cathy! willby

Hi Cathy: I have not have WLS, but like Sandra, I had a hysterectomy years ago, and am less than a month out from abdominoplasty. The recliner helped me in both cases. I have always owned recliners, and because of myriad sleep problems, I've always slept at least part of the night in my recliner. If you want a recliner but can't afford a new one, go to a Goodwill store or check Craig's List. Best of luck. Kasey 365/215/195 (nonop)

Hey Cathy!!!!! ((((((((((((((((WELCOME))))))))))))))))))))))) Day of surgery for me I weighed 400lbs. I am a belly sleeper too. I called around to Medical Equipment Rentals and they run about 80/month here. But the "seat" in the chair was 19-20 inches wide. Ugh, my butt is HUGE!!!!! Wasn't gonna work. So I was just gonna wing it. I had open RNY on 5/23/05 and came home 3 days later. 1st night I slept on the couch on my back with a pillow on top of my tummy and one to my side for comfort. I also had to wear a binder for 6 weeks too. Night 2, I was in my bed sleeping the same way with a bunch of pillows behind me and I put one between me and hubby so he wouldn't knee me or accidently hurt me. I did this for about 5 days. After that I was able to sleep on my side while hugging my long body pillow. I really didn't go back to sleeping on my belly for awhile. About 2 months. I'm not sure I would invest in a recliner just for the surgery, maybe rent one, (ask them the width size of the seat or go see it and sit in it.) Good luck with your surgery and again Welcome!!!!! Yes, buy the recliner. My first three or four days at home I had trouble sleeping anywhere. I was miserable. I slept in a straight chair at first and then graduated to a recliner. I was told by the doctors not to crank out the footrest at first because the movement might cause a hernia. After a couple of days I ignored the doctors advise and was very carefull when I opened or closed the recliner. I have three lazy boys. The last one I bought was a big one, now that I lost weight I am swimming in it. A lift would have been nice after my surgery. You will lose so much weight so fast that you will no longer have any use for the lift in a few months. It depends on how much money you have if a lift would be worth it. For me the answer is no. I am glad I did not buy a lift. Welcome to the board and good luck.

Thank you all for the welcome - I really appreciate it. I'm not sure what I'll do about the recliner business, but I'll let you know. Thanks again!
