Tanja,
I know what you mean about $5 not going far... I am a college counselor and that is a question that I use with many of my single parent mom students who have little to no money to do nice things for themselves... the idea of even going out to a movie and dinner is beyond their dreams so I ask them if they had $5 what would they do for themselves... and it is amazing how many can't think of one thing to do for themselves.... so I make suggestions like... for $2 you can go to the dollar store and buy bubble bath and a candle and have a relaxing hour in the tub after the kids go to bed... things like that.
I myself am very spoiled and have absolutely everything I need and most everything that I want (well, I would take the Hope Diamond but since it isn't for sale, I will have to suffer quietly without it). However, sometimes I do this for myself too in order to keep myself grounded.... for example, someone said yarn... that is a beautiful answer.... I have a whole room in my house devoted to crafting and crafting supplies... I have baskets and baskets of yarn but the idea that I could go and buy a skein of yarn to actually knit myself a new scarf could be very relaxing and special. I also liked the $5.00 for gas... that would take me a whopping 34.5 miles... I could get home from work tonight LOL... DANG... to think about it in those terms stinks... I better buy a moped!!!!
