Hi all! I saw my surgeon today for a preop consult, brought my two teens so they could meet him and ask questions. It was great! He was wonderful and very patient! He asked me if I wanted to consider a new type of WLS that they started doing, called the gastric sleeve. He said it's recommended for patients with very high BMI's. He explained that rather than cut your stomach across the top to create a pouch, the stomach is cut diagonally creating more like a tube shape, and the intestine is not re-routed. He said it's basically the same benefit as the RNY but without the threat of dumping, so in other words, it's restrictive and not mal-absorptive. He said that in very very large patients they do that surgery first, then once they are at a weight that would be less risk to operate further on, they go back and do the RNY. He said it would be up to me, and I loved that he said I wasn't the biggest patient he's operated on! But it does often require a 2nd surgery. I told him that I felt that the dumping threat is one of the things I NEEDED!!! So I'm going to stick with the RNY. I'm thinking about people who have posted here, who are like 6-700 lbs and have to lose weight before a surgeon will do WLS. The way he described it, this is a way to offer the patient a WLS to jump start them, then if the patient isn't losing all of the desired weight, they then do the RNY. He claims it's going to become very popular. Then after my visit with him, I took my girls down to the pre op support group meeting. I met a lady who is having surgery tomorrow, with my same surgeon, and she's having the gastric sleeve! She isn't SMO but is self pay and apparently was offered this surgery at a lesser rate, and she was glad there would be no mal-absorption. So maybe in Miami anyway, sounds like we may start hearing more of this gastric sleeve. Have any of you heard of it? It was a hectic day, I also saw the GI doc and got my endoscopy ordered for next Thursday! Then I see the surgeon one last time, Oct 11th!! Woooo hoooooooooooooo I'm so excited!!!! Oct 14th is just around that corner!!! Hope all is well with all of you, just wanted to share my interesting day! Much love, Carol

hi Carol. I'm so happy for you. Can you believe that on october 14th your journey will finally begin? The Gastric Sleeve that you described sounds like a great idea. I've never heard of it before. But I have no doubt that in the near future they will have something a lot less intrusive than Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve,DS, and Lap Band. But, hey, its all we have now.........and i am so thankful. take care hope you have a speedy recovery willby
