My laproscopic RNY will be the first surgery I have ever had. As a matter of fact I have never had to be hospitalized ever. So the strangest things are kind of freaking me out. I'm not worried about the risks of WLS so much as I am worried about things like having a cathetar(sp?) does it hurt? Can you feel it when you walk, etc. I also want to know how do they transfer you from operating table to your bed. I am mortified at the thought of having like 10 burly men trying to get me into bed. The last thing I want is to be the topic of conversation in the employee lounge like, "Bob through out his back trying to move the lady in room 2B" Any insight or responses would be appreciated. Kim PS. It amazing how the little things can occupy one's thoughts.

Hey Kim, Take it from some one who has had five surgeries, it isn't that bad. Only had to have a cath with the c-sections. They generally do those after your out or they do around here. So you don't feel it at all. Not sure about the RNY if they keep it in or not since I am having the band. As for moving you, I got onto the table myself. They didn't move me. For when I was out of it, they take the sheet thats under you and scoot you across and ask you to help them by scooting with the sheets. Only one time have I actually been picked up and moved and that was due to being so out of it I didn't know who or what I was. It wasn't that far of a move. They scoot the tables together and sort of swing ya back and forth not too much though. hehe. But its nothing like picking you up like dumbo in the blanket and moving you around.. Hope that helps. I still get freaked out over some minor stuff too so don't feel bad. Mine is the oxygen mask you have to wear right before you go out. I get clostrophobic (sp?). Amy

Ok Kim, Nothing to worry about. I had open RNY and I do not remember anything about the cath. Didnt feel a thing when they took it out. Wasnt uncomfortable while it was in there cause they take it out before you are walking. They will make sure it isnt in the way when you get up to go sit after surgery. You just walk a short distance while the cath is in and you dont feel a thing. As far as the table after surgery, dont remember anything. I woke up in a bed in the recovery room. That was the bed they transferred me to ICU in so I didnt have to get up. If anyone talked about me, I dont know about it, and in the grand skeem of things, they dont remember me now so it doesnt matter. People talking about you wont hurt you, but the surgery will help you so dont sweat the small stuff if you can help it. You will be on pain meds after, so you wont feel much of anything, and wont remember much either. Keep in mind the long term goal when you start fretting over things you have no control over. Hope that helps. Email me if you want to chat. Hugs, Soos

Everyone has a different experience with these topics. I was given a great shot in pre-op and dont remember a thing after.. The cath was put in then and when I woke up I didnt realize I had it. It was seriously no problem. As far as getting you from the table to the bed and so on.. It depends on the process the hospital uses.. I did ask about that after my surgery since I have had so many issues with my back. and I had some bruising.. My surgeon has a team of people who do the moving for us SMO... I met several of them after the surgery- they stopped up to check on me. I was worried about what they would say about me- and honestly, I dont think anyone went home to tell the wife "holy crap, you should of seen the heffer I moved today".. they were all truely loving and caring. I dont know what its like at other hospitals, but if your going somewhere that does a lot of WLS then they will have a team of people to care for you.. and hopefully they are all professionals so they dont say or do anything insulting.. after all, we are the reason they have a job!! Good luck, and dont worry about the hospital... You will be treated just fine.. Amber

Kim, I was so anxious before my surgery - they put me out long before I ever got to the table... I just remember the doors opening to the recovery room and that was it. When I woke up the second time I was in my bed in ICU... never experienced them putting in the cath or being transferred from guerney to table, from table to guerney or from guerney to bed. They have wonderful devices in the hospital to help with transferring from bed to bed that make it relatively painless for all concerned... and if you are going to an experienced center they will be even better. Once the catheter was in place ... it didn't bother me at all... and my nurse took mine out while I was up in the chair bathing.... stood up and that was all she wrote... Talk about your fears here and let your surgeon and nurses know when you are concerned... they will do a lot to put you at ease... you do NOT have to suffer through this process - stay out of pain - keep medicated so you can move better and more often - it will help you recover faster -- good luck B

I was SMO when I had my second son via C-section. When they moved me from the operating table to the guerney, they had this wonderful little blow up thing that apparently had been under me the whole time. They inflated it and were able to pull me across to the guerney with just 2 people. I didn't feel any pain from the move at all. As far as the catheter went, I never felt it when it was in, whether I was walking or not. When they took it out, I felt like I was peeing, but that was it. No discomfort at all, really. I hope that helps some and good luck with your surgery. ~Ellen
