On a goofy side-track ... did your Mom ever use favorite "hand-me-down" sayings when you were growing up? Mine did alot ... (but then she had a rather inventive Mother ... see Willby's cursing thread here). An example would be how Mama would sometimes look up at the ceiling and ask "Lord, what have I done to deserve children like these?" when we'd misbehaved ... and two of her most utilized (remember, there were 4 of us, so she used them alot) were: "I swear you are SO stubborn, you'd argue with a sign-post even if you'd painted it yourself!!!" and... "You are SO stubborn you'd scratch your head if your b*tt itched!!" Ah, the little things we remember, right? Anyone else get "quotes" growing up? If so, I'd love to hear them. Myra

Myra, Great post. I can remember a few things my Mom used to say. One was "He/She's a mental case" Now in my childs mind I heard "He/Shes' a Metal case" never understood how a person could fit in a metal case. Another one was "Jesus Wept and Simon Crept". (dont ask me?????) and the famous "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John hold the horse til I get on." Looking back now...........no wonder I'm take care willby

Willby, My brothers and sisters and I (there are 5 of us..yes, my parents didn't use BC) can sit around and throw out sayings that mom would say to us that made us My mom would say,"Don't throw the baby out with the dishwater" I used to visualize a baby laying outside the door of our house crying for it's mommy. My mom would also tell us "You take take take and never give give give" Another fun one was something she would say after we hopped out of the bathtub "You are NAKED as a J-Bird!" What is it about moms in the 50's & 60's???We did a perfect job raising our kids..right Willby??? Those kids have absolutely NO ISSUES at all !! Hugs & Laughs Virginia

Hi Myra, I honestly don't remember any quotes or sayings that my mom, grandma or anyone else used... except me. I had a famous quote when I was little, and the sad part is, I actually believed it was possible!! Whenever I'd get upset with an adult (or generally, someone older than me), my famous words were "Just wait 'til I get big and you get little"! That's about all I have for ya. Take Care, Tanja

My mom STILL uses her favs on me. Let me see....Dawn's one about "I hope you get a child just like you" was OFTEN used on my brother, "you wont understand how your hurting me until you have your own children", "if you roll your eyes one more time I'm gonna knock into the back of your head" ( at 13 I rolled my eyes ALOT, because you know 13 yrs olds know EVERYTHING), my grandmother used to always say "I'm busier than a one arm paper hanger" (actually she still says it), How about the old stand bys "He's a few bricks short of a load"...

I can remember my moma saying this like "I give ya an inch and ya'll take a mile" and "I wish I was sitting on a river bank on a log by myself" lol we MIGHT have been on her nerves lol. And my sister in law told me this when I first got married and she was alot more experienced with kids she had four like doorsteps... One day they are pulling on your apron strings and then when they get older they will be pulling on your heart strings . I guess which means they can break your heart from time to time lol. Thats all I can think of for now. If my moma was still here on earth she sure could rattle some more off cause me and my evil twin were a "lil" bad ;o)... Hugs Margaret

Hi Myra When we were kids, and would try to explain to my mother why we did what we did (but I thought...) she would say "you know what thought did???" I was in my early 20's before I found out that the answer was "thought he would fart, but sh*t instead" LOL we would always wrack out brains to figure it out. Steff
