OK, here goes. Since I have gotten the approval for the surgery I have gained 15 pounds. Sheesh, I've been nervous and I'm an emotional eater. Luckily, my surgeon never said I had to lose weight before the surgery, but I've got 7 days left and I'm worried that because I've gained weight he'll postpone it. Has any post-op experienced this? Seriously Embarrassed ~Nonna

Sorry your facing this at such an emotional time. I didnt have to deal with that (thankfully) but I do know of a couple people who packed on 20+lbs before their surgery date. 1 person was cancelled and 2 others went through just fine... It depends on the surgeon.. Good luck to you! Please keep us updated on how things go.. Amber

Hey Nonna, Nothing to be embarrassed about by no means. It is VERY emotional time now for ya. I can relate to you in one way... EATTING... I was told that they wanted me to lose 60 pounds and come back in few months lol. That was all. So been VERY stressed about it. Have I ate right the whole time NO. But have finally gotten my butt in gear after almost month has passed. I can tell ya personally, it is written in HUGE BLACK LETTERS on the paperwork that my surgeon gives ya in the office that if you gain more before surgery, he postpones it. That should have been enough for me but had to get stress thing in order. So After my SMO buddies put the fear of Jesus in me lol I went and got some slimfast and am doing that twice daily with lowfat snack between like fruit or yogurt or cottage cheese. Whatever you like that is healthy light snack. Then for supper NOTHING goes into my mouth but a lean cuisine meal. I had to get a grip on it. Was WAY out of control. If it wasnt for my good girlfriends on here, I couldnt make it thru this crap!!! Let me know how you are doing or need to yak! hugs Margaret

Hi Nonna, I'm still pre-op but in my consult with my surgeon last week this is what he told me about weight gain and loss before surgery. Please don't be embarrassed...we are in the same boat on this board! We are here for you! He said that he wants his patients to lose at least 15 - 20 lbs + before surgery for three reasons: 1.) When they do the surgery open (as I'm having mine) it helps to shrink our fatty livers and since the operation is under the liver that is VERY important. 2.) Weight loss shows that you are serious about this surgery and your proving it. 3.) it helps you bounce back faster after surgery. His policy is that if you gain weight before surgery he may cancel/postpone it. My dietician was also telling me starting an exercise routine before surgery is a very good idea. Even if its only walking, it all helps you bounce back after surgery. You might be able to call his office and explain the situation and see what they say. Keep us updated... Jamie

Hi Nonna and everybody, I had my first and only cosult with my surgeon back in February. I have gone up and down in weight since then..even with the 6-month diet thing. That was something that my insurance company required, not what my surgeon required. I never heard of the postponing surgery thing till I got on this website...the whole thing sounds so rediculous to me..if we had that kind of tool..why would we need this surgery in the first place? My doctor told me that the worry over losing a few pounds pre-op isn't worth the stress it puts on the paitent. I would simply call the dr's office and ask one of the office gals what is the policy. When you are SMO, 15 lbs. is just a drop in the bucket. My advise is to relax...consentrate on coming through this surgery with a great attitude and peace in your heart..that is what is really important..not a couple of stupid pounds. ((((hugs)))) Virginia (a pre-op who gained weigh too!)

My surgeon was more interested in developing good eating habits and getting exercise than in weight numbers. They made me give up sugars and Pop, ect. Made me start exercising, made me eat 6 meals per day and drink plenty of water. They were more interested in what I ate than the size of the portions. I had lost 25 lbs when I went in for my three month pre op visit. I thought I did great, they did not like what I ate. They postponed my surgery a month and a half. I think you should concentrate on ways to increase the likelihood of success than to worry about how much weight you loss. They said Once you have surgery the weight will come off. Do not be too preoccupied with weight loss prior to surgery. They stressed high protein low carbo's and plenty of water and exercise. I have learned in the last year that losing 195 lbs makes me feel a whole lot better. I thought I was a pretty strong man going into the surgery but the surgery really kicked my fat ass. I would try to get as much exercise in before surgery as you can do. Good luck. John
