Hello, I was wondering how much weight you have to lose before you can have surgery? I weigh around 540 and am currently on a diet. I called to get into a seminar and the lady told me I would have to lose some weight before I had surgery, she didn't say how much but I was wondering if anyone had to do the same and how much weight loss pre-op? I don't go til nov 10th but just wanting to know now

Hi there I don't know if it is the same for everyone but you should at least lose 5% before the surgery!! They will still do the surgery even if you didn't but it will be more painful because they have to move your liver out of the way to get to your stomach. Just little things like drinking alot of water and walking will help you lose the weight dont deprive yourself!! I would talk to your surgeon because that is who told me I had to lose 5% of my weight. I weigh 300 so I have to lose 15 lbs before I get my surgery. I still dont have a date because I have the sleep study to do and pay my program fee!! I am so excited to do this but frustrated at the same time because I never have money to pay!!! Well I hope everything goes well for you!!! I will say a prayer for you!!

Hi Anthony , I think that varies greatly from surgeon to surgeon. I had to lose 10% of my weight because my BMI was over 35, and they would not have done my surgery if I hadn't lost the pre-op weight. However, I have heard of some surgeons who don't require any weight loss and some who just want you to try and will accept whatever you are able to lose before surgery. It's really hard to say how much they would want you to lose; maybe you could call them back and ask if they have a specific amount they require you to lose?? Take Care, Tanja

Thanks Tanja, I know it will make the surgery alot easier, thats all the motivation I need. I haven't dieted in years and i've already lost 13 pounds in about 10 days. I'm just gonna lose as much as I can til' i meet with the surgeon.

Hi Anthony, I was 505 when I went to my first consultation with the surgeon. He didn't require that I lose weight, but he does have everyone do one week of liquids preop. I had no problems with surgery and the surgeon said my liver was still kinda large, but was still able to do it. (and I wasn't his largest patient ever) good luck, Steff

Next time you see your Doctor tell him that's why you are having the operation. I thinks it is dumb to have to lose weight before surgery. John
