Hi Christina!!
Welcome to the best board on the web!!! There are a lot of resources for research on here (OH) so please go exploring and you should find your answers. If you go to the NY message board and find that Dr than you can find reviews written by his patients.
Also... you can find info on open vs. lap for you rny. It's really up to the dr, but, get as educated as possible and you won't have any surprises!!
Come hang out with us!! We love to laugh and joke and just have fun.
I look forward to seeing more from ya!!!
Hey christina, I asked the same question a little while back about the open vs lap RNY. I was told usually on bigger patients they sometimes do it open but it can be done lapro, They just have to use longer lap instruments so you could shop around a little and explore your options. I too would rather have it lapro.
Anthony,
I agree with you SOOO Strongly. We have to remember that tho the surgeon is a profesional with reasons for the decisions they make, they work for US and we shouldn't hire someone unless they are willing to do the job that we want done...
I had a BMI of 83 at my highest and I was 75.4 the day of my surgery. My surgeon said the key is to work the last 30 days pre-op to shrink your liver and to have LOTS of protein in your system for recovery. I know that there are other surgeons that WON'T do lap over a BMI of 50... I would NOT hire them because I know it can be done on larger people that that (if you don't have a tremendous amount of scar tissue from previous surgeries... there are people who are NOT overweight who can't have lap surgeries done on their abdomen due to this). I am short and VERY LARGE and my surgeon told me as long as I got my liver shrunk down he could do fine with the sticks... my surgery went off without a hitch and because I really pushed the nasty protein pre-op I was up and walking like a mad woman within hours of surgery, drove myself home from the hospital and was back to work 6 days later (and could have actually gone back the day after I got released from the hospital but I gave myself a few days.
I believe that many people who are morbidly obese have had a history fo taking what they can get and this is WRONG... we are first class citizens and if a physician isn't willing to sell you the product that you know others have had in similar situations, get a second opininion... there may be legitimate reasons that they shouldn't be doing it lap but my opinion is that it is a MUCH better procedure when done lap for many reasons (I KNOW others will disagree with me but it is MY opinion!)
HUGS
Patti
