I'm home!!
Hi everyone. I had my surgery on Wednesday, 11/9, and got home Friday night. They can't get my potassium levels to LEVEL ... they keep dropping, and they were concerned. I also ran a fever after surgery, and it kept rearing it's ugly head ... don't know if I have one now, as I can't find my thermometer! LOL
I'm glad this is over, and that I'm on THIS side of all of it now... it's been a long road, for sure. But I'm grateful it was possible for me to have this done.
I don't want to get TOO lengthy, but I do have a couple things I'd like to bring up to ask as soon as I feel like sitting longer.
My BIGGEST problem with this surgery so far is my HIPS ... they hurt like I have hot pokers going through the hip joints, and the butt cheeks are numb AND painful. (So not numb enough... LOL). Did anyone else have such horrid hip pain after surgery??
My doc's PA says that it happens sometimes FROM the surgery ~ it's a type of crushing injury, from having so much weight on the table, etc... I am just looking for some way to ease the screams in the butt muscles when I try to move.......... are there any "tips" I should know of??
I also think I may be eating TOO much.... I'm in that "nervous" phase where I think I may have had the surgery, and I'll be the ONE that it doesn't work for. I am praying that's not true. And all I'm "eating" is water, SF Jello, a SF Popsicle here and there... chicken broth, and water. I'm not doing anything wrong that I know of, but I feel guilty every time I put "food" in my mouth now!! (A 390lb anorexic? ~ NOT trying to be funny, either).
Well, thanks for being here, and for letting me vent/gripe/praise/rejoice ..
I'm so glad you're all here.
Thanks!
Hi Sue
Glad to see you back home. I didnt have the hip pain.....but did have a blinding headache. This might sound weird....but have you tried sitting on a heating pad? It helped the gas pains that were stuck in my neck.
I know exactly what you mean about eating too much. I was so scared at first to put anything in my stomach. I would read about women trying foods that werent on the list, and I was in shock/awe that they were so brave. I think the biggest thing I focused on was staying hydrated. You know, the good old sip sip sip.
Sue,did you have to have potassium in your IV? HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!! That hurts.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
willby
Hi Willby
& thanks for noticing me... ;) (A little Eeyore in there...)
Oh, YES, they put several bags of potassium in my IV. And one "round" orally WHILE the bag was dripping in. And, yes, it hurt. ;) But we finally got me .1 over the "minimum" they would accept to send me home, so that's why I got to come home Friday night instead of Saturday. I was SO grateful to get in MY BED ... (as I'm sure you were, too!).
This morning I woke up and my drain was clogged or something ... I had no output for like 6 or 7 hours... and man was my tummy HURTING. I don't know WHAT it was, because once I redid things, redid the drain bulb, now I'm getting a LOT of fluid out, and it's helping reduce the "pressure" pain in my stomach area. (Which is a LOT of area, of course ;) ).
I had a friend buy me a king size heating pad last night, and have been sitting on it, and it DOES help with the pain in the hips.
So how are you doing at the post op stage you're at, Willby? Yours hasn't even been a month... are you feeling good? More "normal" than fearful (of food) ? I am just trying to concentrate on sip-sip-sip... not gulp, and water-water-water ... stay hydrated ... thanks for the reminder, though!! This is soooooooo strange an experience. I am SO grateful we have this board to connect through ~ otherwise I would really feel loony, I think.
Happy Sunday!!
Sue, welcome home!!!!! You did it! Willby had some great suggestions and she is such a great help! Give your hip a couple days with the heating pad and I bet it will be back to normal. Sounds to me that you are doing wonderful with your food...if you can call it that... ha ha ha! That is wonderful that you were able to come home one day early. Love hearing about how you are doing! Sue, I am thinking of you.
hugs, Aunt Pam
