Hello friendly people I finally met with the surgeon (I started this process two years ago...) and he is going to try to do my surgery laproscopically--however--he pointed out that I have a thick pad of fat right above my bellybutton. I'm afraid he may have to switch to open. I'm 5'7", 348 pounds and my BMI is 55. My question is...has anyone with a similar body composition on this board had a successful lap operation?

Hi Ms.Sennentt On my surgery date I weighed 375, and I am 5'7 also. So, I don't see why he can't do it lap. Good luck to you!! Hugs, Alicia

That is very interesting guys. When I was on my quest for surgery alot of doctors did not do lap for someone over 50 bmi. But I was also told that has alot to do with a surgeons skill level.

hiya ms. my bmi was 65 when i had surgery in february of this year. i'm 5'9 and my weight was 450 or so. i had a lap rny and my dr. said it went very well. it really does depend on the dr's skill and, according to my dr., it also depends on whether you've had any prior surgery in that area, since that would have left behind scarring and that would make the lap more difficult. take care, ms. i wish you the best of luck on your journey. dorthe

I weighed 364 and had lap RNY. I really did well with the surgery. I hope you can have it lap RNY, it is a much easier recovery. Lori 384/272/170
