I had not made it to a wheel chair, but I had to use a walker for about 3 months because I had back surgery and it took awhile for it to strengthen back up. I know that I could veryly get around for awhile. I had to limit where I could go and what I could do. It was really hard to just get up and go to the bathroom, take a sponge bath and put clean clothes on that was a challenge and totally wore me out. It just got a little better ever day.My wls dr. would not do surgery on me until I could walk at least 20 minutes at a time. bye love marie

Hi Rosa, One of the main reasons I had this surgery was I was becoming non-ambulatory. My PCP told me I'd be in a wheelchair in a year if I didn't get all the extra weight off my spine, and that I'd dead from other co-morbidities in 5 if I didn't lose weight. I could walk with a cane about 15 feet, and then back pain and breathlessness could bring me down. I was becoming virtually house-bound, having my groceries delivered, missing out on family get-togethers, and basically unable to concentrate on much else but hurting. I won't tell you WLS has solved my back issue ... but it's definitely been the key reason my pain level is down now to where I can get on with my life. I still face another big back surgery, but I'm avoiding that as long as I can. WLS has made all the difference in the world for me. All the best, Myra 442/279/150 hw/pw/gw

I've had to rent one a few times in the past to go to dr's and the few times I have to leave the house. I know I should have one of my own as I cant walk to far but I guess I just can't face that fact. I do use a walker around the house though.

I was/am. I was basically non-ambulatory when I started my pre-op diet. I could only take a few steps even with with my walker. I have an electric scooter that I have used when I go places for several years. I have gotten to the point now where I can get around the house a bit with walker. On the rare occasions that I leave the house I use the scooter.

Oh yes.. me and my scooter traveled everywhere. I also used an office chair to clean and cook..ect... I depended on it. I was 534 lbs and still have the 3 herniated discs in my lower back, but I am up and about now. Blessings, ~ Tina -264

Ladies thanks for answering.Iam at the begining of the process for WLS.Ihave been reserching since a good friend had such great results.Let me expain.Iwas born with cerebral Palsy.Thankfully,it affected only my ability to walk normallyMy leg muscles have been tight (Ihave had several surgeries to help the cp be more manageable) Iwalked on crutches even as I matured and taught school for 14 years.I GAINED weight which threw my balance off more.AND OF COUSE THE EXTRA WEIGHT WAS HARDER FOR MY WEAK legs to carry I had a couple of bad accidents due to my bad balance .I was then told that a chair would be safer for me During the last three years of sitting I HAVE PILED ON THE POUNDS!!!!I WEIGH BETWEEN 285-325 POUNDS! I WENT TO Dr.Duncan's seminar and he made a general statement that he did not like to do WLS on wheelchair bound folksShould I CONTINUE THE PROCESS?having the surgery would help me lose the weight and I WOULD BE THRILLED TO BE MORE ACTIVE! tHANKS FOR LISTENING!
