Doctor visit
I had my appt. with my fp. Dr. today. He is totally against WLS. I know I dont need a referal from him to see a surgeon but I really wanted his support. My bloodpressure was 180/119 and my sugar was 245, so I used that in my arguement about why wLS would be a good tool for me, but he just didnt want any thing bad to happen to me . He said he would talk to the other Dr. in his practice and see what other alternitive (sp) they can come up with. Ill see what they come up with ,and give it a try , if it doesnt work Ill get a WLS dr. on my own.
Cathy,
Giving other options a serious try first, isn't a bad idea. Weight loss surgery is risky and requires a tremendous commitment to be and stay successful. I worry about my long term success all the time. Try what they suggest, if it doesn't give you results then you will both be convinced!
Good luck towards your health!

Follow your heart and head. Your PCP lacks information. Any surgery carries some risk. My surgeon, who is the president of the American Bariactric Surgery Association does a lot of research. He quotes that WLS has the same risk factor as knee surgery and that that 95 percent of obese people who lose weight gain it back. Weigh your options and make an informed decision. Hugs, Loris
I tried to tell him that everytime I diet I just end up gaining more weight back. He thinks if i would just eat less and exercise I would lose weight. I told him that he most likely eats more than I do and that chasing a 2yr old and 11 month old around all day is exercise. He is very skinny so he doesnt know what it is like to hurt so bad you cant sleep, or have to endure peoples stares and hurtful remarks .
It is too bad your doctor is not supportive, but a lot of people believe that dieting will work. I am lucky my PCP was extremely supportive, her mom had WLS a couple years ago and did great. At least you don't need a referral, so you can decide for yourself what to do. I am not a doctor, but when I was pregnant, my blood pressure got up to 140/90 and they put me on meds (it is normally about 110/70), so that seems really high! And I know the blood sugar is high. It seems to me surgery would be safer than diabetes and high blood pressure.
And, statistically, WLS has a lower mortality rate than knee surgery, and no one hesitates to have knee surgery done.
Good luck in whatever you decide.
