My particular surgeon does.... 1. The sleep apnea test, if it's indicated as neccessary (it wasnt for me) 2. A sonogram to check the gallbladder for diease and/or stones (I have stones so mine will be removed during surgery) 3. The usual bloodwork and urinalysis. Lisa L.

Hey Jessica! for pre-op testing I had: 1. Upper GI test....which they just make you drink some barium stuff and they take x-rays 2. Chest x-ray 3. Blood work and UA 4. Breathing test and Blood gas(which hurt) 5. EKG and Echo. (easy) Everything was easy... the blood gas hurt but its manageable nothing terrible. I didnt need a sleep test. Good Luck! Steph

Jessica, When I went to my surgical consult, the only test I needed was a regular blood draw (blood count, cholesterol, pregnancy, etc). I had gone previously to my PCP and asked her to order me a gall bladder ultrasound locally, since my surgeon was far away, but it was unecessary. No testing at all. Good luck, Carrie

Hi Jessi! First, every person and every surgeon is different. Some clearances are required because of pre-existing conditions (diabetes, heart conditions, asthma, etc). I know of many people who weren't required to get any pre testing done. My surgeon required me to get all the clearances and testing done on my own, which wasn't easy. Other surgeons will refer you to other doctors for testing. Again, it varies by surgeon. They should tell you what you need to get done at your consultation. Clearances I needed before surgery were: - EKG, Echo, and stress test - Cardiologist - Sleep study and PFT - Pulmonologist - Psych Eval - Psychologist - Nutritional Eval - Nutritionist - Physical, bloodwork, and approval from my PCP. - Approval from the asthma physician My insurance company also required a nutrition eval, a psych eval, and a 6-month doctor supervised diet before they approved me. Insurance companies can sometimes require things that the doctors don't. Pre admission testing is different. They do that at the hospital once surgery is scheduled. For that they did: - bloodwork, including an ABG (Arterial blood gas test) - Urinalysis - Chest x-rays - Ultrasound of liver and gallbladder - Clearance by their internist at the time of testing. - Meet with their nutritionist Best wishes and good luck on your consultation.
