OT- prayers needed!
Bobby
I was told by my nutrionist that it was to make you not feel too full too fast. Not all of the liquid runs through like a drain. Some of it sets there for a while and is mixed with the food that comes later. Especially when you are first out of the hospital and your are only eating 1-2 ounces you don't want to think you are full on liquids when you need to get in your protein.
You are correct about drinking during and too soon afterwards. This can move "some" of the food on through the intestines sort of like a leaf in a storm drain. It just gets pushed on along. Still some of the food remains, but not enough to be absorbed for it's nutritional value.
Alas, at 16 months out I do sometimes drink with meals. But, like George at this point I am sure of my portion control. Also, even though I'm not getting in all of the protein I could if I didn't drink anything, I'm also eating slightly larger portions and somehow it all works out in the wash.
Follow the rules and you can't go wrong. These drinking rules are the same all over the country so it must be right, regardless of who says it.

Bobby,
I think "Pouch Rules" is one clinics recommendations from back early on RNY.
I know that it was already a "Hand-Me-Down" of a "Hand-Me-Down," back in '01-'02
When I first started coming out to read these Boards.
Some of the info, I also have been recommended to follow
But altered, and some, not at all.
Example-
"1. The patient must time meals [LESS THAN for me] five hours apart ....."
2. The patient needs to eat finely cut meat and raw or slightly cooked veggies with each meal.
[Yes, Early On]
3. The patient must eat the entire meal in 5-15 minutes.
A 30-45 minute meal will cause failure. [NOPE, no such info from my Doc or Nut]
4. No liquids for 1 ½ hours to 2 hours after each meal.
[Stop liquids when starting to eat- Before and no liquid until 30 minutes After for Me]
5. After 1 ½ to 2 hours, begin sipping water and over the next three hours slowly increase water intake.
[see above]
6. 3 hours after last meal, begin drinking LOTS of water/fluids.
[NOPE, Not at all]
7. 15 minutes before the next meal, drink as much as possible as fast as possible. This is called "water loading." IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN DRINKING OVER THE LAST FEW HOURS, THIS 'WATER LOADING' WILL NOT WORK.
[Yes, I do "Water Load" by drinking about a cup of water right before eating]
8. You can water load at any time 2-3 hours before your next meal if you get hungry, which will cause a strong feeling of fullness.
[guess So, but I tend to just get in water all day]
I think these "rules" were early on RNY protocols
Published by one, early on, and have been re-typed and passed on the internet
To the point of becoming only mildly accurate.
My Advice?
Do what YOUR Doc says to do.
Best Wishes-
Dx
Hi Amber,
Your brother will definitely be in my prayers. I would talk to your sister and see if she can maybe get him to go get looked at once he gets to her house.
Take care of yourself, too much worrying can do funny things to us, he is in our prayers and you have done all you can. Keep positive and I am sure he will arrive at your sisters safe and sound.
Lori
