BAND OR BYPASSS?

Hi everyone, I'm a soon to be bandster......and I've posted before however, as I'm getting closer and closer to getting the band, I'm getting closer and closer to thinking that maybe the band is not for me. I've researched weight loss surgery for a 1 and 1/2 before I got to the point that I'm at right now (6 months into the process of actually doing it) and I ALWAYS WANTED THE BAND. I worked at a place for 3 years whose insurance didn't pay for the band only the bypass and so I opted to have nothing at all. Now, I have insurance that will pay for it but the proces has been so ongoing (because I have h-pylori and can't seem to get rid of it and I had a slight problem with one of my lungs....no other health problems though) and I've heard so many times that the band would not be right for me. First, because (and I'm sure that you all heard this)my BMI is 65 (5'9 1/2, 452 pounds), second because my problem isn't portions but moreso, what I eat.......carbs and sugar is my #1 problem. I've switched surgeons after my final consult (very exhausting) because I felt the surgeon was really not out for my best interest. My new surgeon (although I haven't had my last consult with him because I'm waiting on the EGD clearance for the h-pylori), well at least his office's point of view is that if you are a morbidly obese person, the lap band is recommended but only with high risk health issues that make you better suited to have the lap band surgery because it's safer, shorter and less invasive. BUT, the idea is that the big bandster will also need Gastric Bypass surgery because the amount of weight loss won't generally be enough to get their BMI down to under 40. I read alot of success stories here and other places online and I felt confident that I could beat the odds like others and lose down to 250 (I was very happy/healthy at 289 and can't imagine myself any smaller than 250) with the band but when I hear the fill stories, I begin to recognize that the band is really trial and error for the most part....how much is enough for restriction, how much is too tight, etc. My surgeon's office told me that they have the assistants perform the fills (I was not happy about this) and they do it in the office. I questioned them about hearing that it was always best to have the fills done under fluroscope in X-ray with Barium and she said they don't put their patients at risk with radiation unless it's necessary. I, then asked how do you know whether or not a patient has a leak of if you have tightened it too much, etc. She really had no response for me. Also, I begin to think about whether or not, I want to move soon....do I really want to have to look into aftercare in another state, too. What if the aftercare program there is not good? You're really just reliant on the team of professionals you have around you. I am a 31 year old female, I do not have diabetes, high blood pressure, joint problems or anything to date.... Do you guys think that maybe I would be a better candidate for Gastric Bypass? I opted for the band for the same reasons you guys did....for the safety of it....the slower weight loss (prompting less hanging skin, etc.) but I want to make the right decision for me. I even had one extraordinary bandster (who I met on Obesity help) tell me that the band is not for people who don't have portion issues. That it won't work for me because it doesn't curve your appetite for the sweets and carbs and the band will allow you to eat those things. I met a young lady the day before yesterday in the store who had only lost 48 pounds in 1 1/2 years because she loved sweets and refused to change her eating habits.....I keep thinking that I won't be like that, I refuse to get up on a cutting board and then eat the same way but maybe I'm wrong. Mabye it's harder than I think to not fall back into the same habits. I hear that it is. Funny enough, I, also met a young lady who had lost 150 pounds with never having but 1 fill. I was amazed. I need to lose 180-200 pounds, I'm scared that I might lose more than that or worst, lose too fast with the bypass and I'm scared I won't lose enough with the band....what the heck?
