Unemployed or Overweight?

I got this from a medical daily briefing I get each day: Et cetera: More Americans would prefer to be unemployed than overweight 05/02/2006 A recent poll in Fitness magazine finds that more than half of U.S. adults would rather be unemployed than gain a significant amount of weight, USA Today reports. The poll, which surveyed more than 1,007 individuals, found that 58% of women and 54% of men would rather lose their jobs than gain 75 pounds. In addition, 63% of women and 55% of men reported that they would rather "be poor and have no extra pounds to lose than be rich and substantially overweight." According to the survey, the vast majority of men and women would not be willing to sacrifice 20 IQ points to "gain the perfect body," but 7% of men and 5% women said they would do so "in an instant." The executive editor of Fitness says the findings suggest that "people believe it's a monumental struggle to lose weight" but that "in reality, small daily changes can make weight loss a much less daunting effort" (Hellmich, 5/1).

I thought you were talking about me! I'm overweight, and currently unemployed because my weight has caused some disabling health issues. It will be a happy day for me when I get my weight down to a point where I can go back to work. Maybe I'm weird... well, yes, I am weird , but the point is, I like working. It's sad that society views obesity in such a negative way, isn't it? Kix

Ditto, Kix ... on disability for back, which was complicated, still is to a lessening degree by obesity. What that article leaves out is the ratio of people who would GAIN weight as a result of unemployment idleness and worries. My weight ballooned over 100+ lbs AFTER I became unemployed and disabled-status (and I was already 300+ then), simply because I was hurting and didn't/couldn't move much. Folks have blinders on sometimes, don't they? I liked working too and would like to get back to it soon if I can, just not doing what I used to do. Now I want to be something different when I "grow up". Myra

When I go back to work and they ask why I haven't worked in so long... I am gonna tell them I was in prison...
