Women be aware when leaving home

had an incident this morning that made me think I should warn other women who have to leave their home early in the morning. I have to be at work at 5 a.m. so I usually leave home between 5:30 - 5:40 a.m. I always check over my balcony before I head down the stairs. This morning it was business as usual but just as I getting ready to back out of my parking spot, this female appears from nowhere at my passenger window and ask if I could give her and this man a ride to Alton. I told her she was already in Alton. She then said just drop them anywhere in Alton. I told her again she was already in Alton and to get away from my car. Then there was this man standing behine my car and he started shouting and cursing at me and telling her to "just get in the car." Luckily for me, I always lock my doors. As the man became more and more threatening and started saying he was not moving and they were going to get in the car. I put the car in reverse and hit the man and then the woman ran out of the way. I immediately drove to the police station to file a report. The officer there told me that I did the correct thing because they would have taken my car, money and possibly my life. So, I just want to warn women leaving their homes early in the morning to 1), always lock your doors immediately after getting in. 2) always be aware of your surroundings. 3) Do not be afraid to do what you have to do to get away from the situation. I thank God for the strength to do what I did. I also thank God for his protection and guidance.

Yikes, Marie! I used to live in St. Louis and I thought Alton was a safe little town. Of course, I lived there 20 years ago, things have probably changed since then. It's very important to be aware of your surroundings at all times (not just early in the morning) and never, never offer anyone a ride unless you know them. It's easy to get sucked into feeling sorry for someone who looks stranded, but your kind gesture can easily turn into your last gesture. I wouldn't have offered them a ride, but I'm not sure I would have been brave enough to back up the car. I probably would have honked the horn and made the neighbors mad enough to come outside and see what was going on. Good thinking on your part, and I am glad you are safe! Maybe you should carry a flashlight that you can shine on the car until you are safely inside. Kix

You know what, I never even thought about blowing the horn. Is something wrong with me? Why would my first instinct be to run him over instead of draw attention. I can't change what I did but I do have something to think about. Oh yea, Alton is a safe little town but we get people that come from surrounding areas and commit crimes. I mean we have our share of want to be criminals but it's not usually nothing big. But for real, crime is every where and getting worse. I think my instinct has always been fight for survival. I just thank God for his protection. The flashlight is a good idea also. thanks.

Marie, What a terrifying experience! I'm so glad you were brave enough to just back on out, even if you DID hit that man! I can't imagine your fright. Thanks for the words of warning. ((hugs)) Myra G

Hi Marie... I applaud you... I think you are very brave and courageous. I also think you didn't think to hit the horn because of the early hour and not a lot of people being up and your adrenalin was flowing and it was the fight or flight thing. He was blocking your way and trying to intimidate you and would have probably caused you grave harm. You acted on instinct.. Perhaps your guardian angel whispered in your ear and that's how you found the strength and knowledge to do what you had to do. Good for you for listening. I lived in a small "safe" town.. but that didn't keep the crazies and drug addicts out... You did good... Stay safe and thanks for this reminder ....
