Topic: I am so sad - Had to lose the Band

I just have to know if there is anyone out there like me.  I got the band in may of 07.  Did ok, a lot of pbing but I tolerated it.  Well last Monday I had to have it removed,  The doctor says my body was rejecting it.  I ended up the ER in another state while on vacation.  Severe GERD, vomitting, blood in my vomit.  Not able to drink or eat a thing.  At times including my own spit.  The upper gi showed the band in perfect placement, I had nothing in the band and still could not eat.  Terrible acid, could not lay down to sleep.  Anyways, I had it removed last week.  He said there was a little scar tissue and some inflammation.

I should be happy I got it out and am recovering so well but I am pissed off it did not work for me.  I was a self pay because I did not think I would be covered under insurance.  I am now a size 12 but with the appetite back with full force I fear what weight will come back.  I was so miserable that the doctor did not want to do any revision at the time of removal.

I am just wondering if anyone else had these issues?

I am shocked they are having you wait at all.  They will probably do a complete unfill, put you on liquids and see if it goes back where it belongs.  If not they may have to replace the band or remove it.

Good Luck

I'm glad I could help. I had to have mine removed. I had horrible complications due to surgeon error from the get go. I almost died, another surgeon tried to help me when my original surgeon just ignored me, and then I finally was in so much pain daily that the band had to come out. I had 3 different doctors tell me that I simply HAD to have it removed. It was a completely nightmare and the worst couple years of my life.

I am glad to see you visited the LapBand board. You will see you're not alone.

Topic: Band Slipped Upward
Has anyone had their band slipped upward to their esophagus?  I just had an endoscopy last Thursday and the doctor told me that is what happened.  I also had an barium swallow the week before and that doctor told me he couldn't see a band around my stomach!  I called my bariatric surgeon on Friday and they want me to have yet another barium swallow on Monday.  Then I see the bariatric surgeon on Thursday.  Not sure what will happen next, Thursday can't get here fast enough.

OMG!  Thank you so much.  You have helped so much.  Can I ask why you had it removed???

The left shoulder pain is fairly common with banded patients, I have found. I had severe left shoulder pain the whole time I had my band. I had it removed in 2005 and still have occasional pain from damage done to my diaphragm during surgery (which was in 2003.)

Sometimes applying heat to the diaphragm area can help the pain subside. I used a ho****er bottle, heating pad or heat patch.

If the pain was in your stomach area, I would be willing to bet that you had a gas buildup. It can cause tremendous pain... more than I ever would have thought possible before having the band.

Some people have a really hard time tolerating the lapband. If your symptoms worsen or you start having chronic pain, you might want to consider talking to your surgeon about a revision. Good luck. I hope your pain problems are over and done!

ps. Check out the lapband board, if you haven't already. Someone else has posted a question about constant left shoulder pain.

Thanks for the info.  That's good to hear....I think.  The pain seems to be mostly gone now. It was my stomach area.

I get this weird left shoulder pain though went I eat.  it's weird.  I think it's when I'm full...sort of like an indicator to stop.  I've always had it, but now I need to monitor it more.

Where are you having the most pain? From what I've heard, slips sometimes enable you to eat more than you had been. I don't recall hearing about pain associated with slips so much.

I hope it's subsided by now. Depending on where the pain is located, it could be gas buildup.
