Topic: RE: What did you do before....
Oddly enough, I always thought it would be fun to be a dispatcher WAYYYY before I knew what one really was. I remember being 18 and asking one of the state police sgts if he needed a dispatcher locally. I was half kidding, but obviously there was an interest there. The bizarre thing there was that I ended up dispatching in a small town half way across the state and then ended up dispatching for state a few years after that and ended up dispatching that same sgt. The same sgt who also gave me my very first speeding ticket.
It's such a small world!
As for what I did before, basically office work and I hated it. Filing just killed me. I would let it pile up and just couldn't face the day to day paperwork. I was in heaven when I finally fell into dispatching.

This is just very sad to me. I don't know why they can't keep their wits about them sometimes. We had an officer with a similar situation only he was one of three involved with a cadet who was a minor at the time but is 21 now. She isn't cooperating as she doesn't want to pursue any charges, but the officers lost their jobs anyway. We also had another officer lose his job because he and a gal in one of the outlying offices apparently had sex in the office while on duty. What on earth possesses them? If you can't be "good" then why take such risks? I just don't get it. Thrill of getting caught maybe...who knows. Very disappointing though. Really makes you stop and think.

It is truly sad. One of our Township officers was recently arrested...Turns out this 10 year officer developed a relationship with a 14 y/o girl while he was investigating a sexaul assault.. that was 2 years ago... until she turned 16 nothing sexual happened, by PA law, she was of consenting age so no statutory charges will be filed, but he is in trouble for corruption of a minor, possesion of child *****graphy (she sent him partially nude pics of herself, and he had them on his work computer!!!) there are a few other charges I just can't remember right now. it turns my stomach to think someone I know, and like, could do such a sick thing. This officer is married with young children, and is a very personalble man. And recently a city cop was asked to resign, allegedly due to owning child *****graphy... I know cops are just people, but I think they should be held to a higher standard the a "regular" person... aren't they the ones who choose to protect and serve and stop the people doing the exact things they are now in trouble for... We are a small county and to have similar inceidnets in less then 3 months makes me very sad....

I never had a full time job before I started dispatching a little over 4 years ago. I had recently gotten divorced and suddenly needed a real job.
Before that I worked in a gas station, at a nursing home, various restaraunts and went to college part time while caring for our 2 kids.

Before becoming a Dispatcher I worked as a Security Guard, prior to that I worked as a Paramedic and EMT. I also worked as a kitchen worker for Vassar College part-time during school as well as Wendy's and K-Mart. I am also a life member of my fire department.

Not a dispatcher yet....but I worked in a manufacturing plant in Oregon..making luxury motor coaches. I was in the upholstery department for 11 years. Then moved to Alaska...worked one year in another manufacturing facility making liners for portable blu-med hospital units and military buildings. Then they closed plant up here. Now.....I am looking for work. Believe it or not I entertained the idea of being a dispatcher several times throughout my life. Then recently there was an ad for dispatcher in training and I am pursuing it even tho I did not score high enough on initial testing to get into training.

Wow how times change. Thanks for sharring your history with me. I think I will do as you suggested and see if they will let me in just to watch. I know when I was taking the tests I could hear them dispatching and chatting with eachother.
I do hope something can come out for me from this.
Thanks again.

Thank you Brianna. I visited your home page and its great. I love all the little personality quiz results too. Went and took a few myself.
Yah, the tests (20 of them) consisted of maps, audio recall and memory skills. Lots of typing and all the while simulated emergency calls would come thru and you would have to dispatch proper response teams to that emergency while info is still coming in for you to type and be quized on. All my dispatch responses were correct. My map reading was 100 percent. The part that kicked me was the audio recall where they read off a series of letter/numbers about 16 codes long, then 5 seconds had pass and then you had to type it back in while still doing emergency responses. The thing that bothers me a bit, is that this was not a test to get the job...it was tests to get into training for the job. I thought for sure I would get in. Also,I used to have a pretty good memory, but after spinal menengitis two winters ago it has not been the same. I am looking for ways to excersize it...hoping to restore it like a weak muscle. Not sure if it will work or not.
Another member sugested going in to watch sometimes too. I have some time on my hands while I am recuperating and think I will do just that. When I was taking my test it was right next to dispatch and I could here them in there doing their job.
anyway, thanks for sharing your experience with me.
Good Luck today and all tomorrows.
