Topic: I'll take vanity for $100....
Someone on my surgery date message board posted a link to Hot or Not and you know, I just couldn't resist. I had to see what everyone thought of me. A lesson in both humility and vanity all wrapped into one tidy little website.
Okay, so I will never measure up to the chicky babes who are posing their asses off (literally) but so far I'm not doing as bad as I thought. So far of 599 votes I have a 7.4 rating. Hey - it's better than what I thought I'd get.
Here is my link if you want to look: http://hotornot.com/r/?eid=AMKUHLH-BDF.
As the friend who posted this said: a couple of years ago I wouldn't even dream of posting my picture on one of these things. Amazing what a little time and a gastric bypass will do for ya.

Here I am...bringing up the rear!
Things have been crazy at work lately with the flooding and fatals all over the place. Good news is that I got my overtime check from December and I didn't realize I worked quite that much, but WHOOHOO, that is going to put a dent in my credit card!!!

Goes in spurts where I am. Right now our turnover rate is relatively low compared to prior years. For awhile there under the dictatorship of our one Lt., we were losing people left and right and couldn't hire and keep newbies. Now as things have changed a bit, we are seeing more and more people hanging around. More than half I would say have been there for about 10 years, give or take one or two. I've been there 14 years.
I've heard the statistic since I started dispatching back in 88 that if you're going to burn out it will generally be around the 2 year mark. If you last much past that you'll likely do this for a career. But that didn't speak to one staying at the same department though.

Topic: RE: What did you want to be.....
Well, I'll preface this with saying that I'm happier in my job now than I ever have been before. I finally feel like I've been able to put it in perspective and accept things as they are when I cannot change them. That made a huge difference for me. And my environment there is better than it has been in a long time. That is a huge component to a happy work environment.
That being said, when I was young, I wanted to be a superstar!
Who doesn't? I wanted to be a singer and possibly an actress. As I got closer to graduation I decided I wanted to be in journalism. I still think that would have been a fun occupation, but my opinion of the press has been compromised over the years of dispatching.
Now if I were to change jobs, I think if I were to work for someone else, it would be in advertising/marketing. I think that is a place I could excel...I have a knack. If I were to own my own business, it would be to own a coffee shop and roast my own beans!
Dina....I don't want much....

Hello! I wanted to be a choir director either at the High School or College levels. I went to college as a music major and enjoyed it until I had the opportunity to direct my church choir and hated it A LOT! I changed my major shortly afterwards and actually never finished my degree - ugh! I've thought about going back to college but with this schedule and the fact that I'm 43, it's not going to work! I also want to start excersizing more but that's not working either... lmao!
If I could change careers now I'd go back to doing background investigations, I really enjoyed that job but had to leave it when I relocated back to NC (that's when I came back to dispatching)... I also think I'd like working in forensics... who knows... lol!
I really really want to just win the lotto and not have to work, but we know that won't happen... we don't even have the lotto here in NC yet... lol!
Have a great day!

Hi Brianna,
Ive been at my current job for 7 years...but worked 10years prior to that in a smaller suburban department.
I think we have a pretty low turnover rate...maybe cuz we are union employees and our pay scale is pretty good. (cost of living here is crazy though)
We have something like 20 dispatchers currently in training, but they won't actually hit the operations floor til April (I think). Soooo, hopefully that will alleviate some of the mandatory overtime issues we're experiencing lately. Don't know how many out of the 20 will actually stick around....it is very intimidating to some folks...and we all know that not everyone likes to help train new hires. And then there are the folks on the other end of the radio who can sometimes behave badly when they hear an unfamiliar voice on the radio.
When I worked in the suburbs, it seemed like the burnout rate was about 2 years....then again, the suburban depts tend to have dispatchers doing a whole lot more besides dispatching/answering 911 calls.
