I guess it all depends on where you live.. in our county, I didn't need experience, just a basic knowledge of the county (which I didn't really have, but learned quickly) I went to the local Career Link and applied there.. was trained, then thrown to the wolves!! Good Luck, I enjoy being a dispatcher alot more then I ever thought I would !!!

Topic: so excited I have to share!!!
Please check out my profile for the newest pic of me.. I was goofing around tonight , after realizing just how baggy my pants were getting and tried sticking both legs into one pant leg.. and I was able to do it!!! I am frugal, ok downright cheap to a fault and have been wearing the same pants since before surgery. The ones in the pic are cotton, not stretchy at all... guess when I get my tax refund I will have to do some shopping!!!
Thank you all for your support, you are all amazing!!

Topic: RE: too much time on my hands!!!
OH NO!!! I am talkig to myself now
I am not sure which is worse, no calls, or 6, 911 hang up's from untraceable (most like no service, and dead) cell phones in 15 minutes!
CALGON TAKE ME AWAY!!!

Topic: I hate being in charge!
When I was moved to overnights, I was made Alternate shift leader.. early yesterday morning I was told I was over reacting because the girl on phones (she was on OT) took a call from a man, claiming to be Amish, who needed to know where to buy whiskey because his cow had pneumonia... (that part is funny, you don't get those calls every day) she gave him a location (not mentioning that the state store was closed at 6 in the morning) BUT she went on to tell the guy you need a photo ID (most Amish do not get state issued ID cards) and that if he didn't have one to get a neighbor or someone else who has an ID and is over 21 to get it for him!!!! When I called her on it, she said it is the clerks job to check the ID, yes but she told him to get someone else to buy it for him!!! She still doesn't see what she did as wrong... and in all honesty the guy was most likely telling the truth, but there is always the chance he was under age and she just advised him to have somone buy him booze! the more I thought about it, the more I know I need to write the incident up, just in case.. CYA... UGH, I don't like being the boss!

Topic: RE: Do you use EMD, EFD, or EPD???
Hi Brianna and everyone else---we use EMD at our center here in Rochester, New York. It has saved lives and welcomed more than a few new infants born at home. I don't like the responsibility of doing it cause I have no medical background at all myself, but I know that it works and it is a good program. We did a trial program of the EPD for a while, but we finally got rid of that. Most of us have been dispatching and answering phones for 15 years or more and we found that the EPD didn't work as well for our center as our tried and true methods do. It was a real relief to go back to our comfortable way of gathering the vital info. I've been a police dispatcher for 20 years and I was a TCC for one year prior to that. In our center we have eleven dispatch lines and a minimum of eleven phone operator lines. The dispatchers also have to rotate through the TCC positions. We spend some time on the phones at least once a week and sometimes for an hour or two when we are going through a dispatch line as well. Our full time TCC's are much better at EMD than the police dispatchers are, but we are required to keep our scores up and it really does work.
Topic: RE: call volume???
Paula, that would be cool, only do one position. We are so small, things are set up that no matter if you are on phones, PD or Fire/EMS you can do everything from all positions... I have been on PD dispatching EMS so many times it isn't funny, while handling the PD traffic too.
