The job can effect your weight for sure! I am one of 5 dispatchers in a center of 40 that has had some form of surgery (lap band for me)....thats a pretty high percentage! I also think we have a great chance to get the surgery because, in general, we have decent insurance.....I'm very excited that I found this page, and as you can tell by my lack of picture, Im new here! The idea of having people that understand more of my life than my weight is going to be a great tool I hope!!

Hi Dannielle,
There are a lot of people where I work that have had WLS.
I think the job contributes greatly to obesity. Considering the crazy schedules we work, and the high stress level it is no wonder a lot of us seek out food....the wrong types of food. Heck, the only places open on the midnight shift are greasy-spoon diners, and fast food places.
Good luck on your WLS journey!!! Keep posting on the Dispatchers Board....we need more activity here!
How long have you been dispatching? For me, it's going on 18 years...eeeek!!!!
cheers!
Paula

Thursday during my appointment with the psychologist he pointed out to me that a certain percent of the patients he sees for WLS (something like 4% of them) are Dispatchers of some sort.
I thought that was an interesting fact that I'd share with you all!

I thought I was checking this board more often!
I wondered if they were shipping dispatchers down there. I haven't heard anything requested out of Oregon, but at OSP we are always short on personnel so they may have chosen not to post any requests because we just can't spare it. Good to know they are being taken care of though!

Hi All,
Anyone else out there volunteering to help out at dispatch centers in the gulf coast?
Looks like as of today, Illinois is sending about 14 Operators (state police) along with the 2nd wave of assistance. No one from CPD as far as I know.

Topic: RE: Question on merging
Well, I've seen it done before locally and although I don't know how it has gone with those agencies, I can say with the our State Police we have gone from 5 dispatch centers in the state to 2 and it has always been a huge trauma and never been done right. Ooopsie...did I say that?
The problem is the legislature gets involved with our stuff and when these folks dictate to us how things are going to run, it always ends up in a mess.
On a local level I suspect the growing pains might include integrating equipment and learning how that works, learning new areas to dispatch (which is always such a joy) and procedures for each different department. If they are smart, they will have the individual departments comply with the dispatch center rather than the other way around.
If you want to ask on another forum, there is a pretty great group of people over at www.oregon911.com and there is a forum you can join to chat with everyone. There are a lot of folks from other states who have joined in, so don't be shy. I'm sure you'll get some answers there.
