PIT/LAB MIX
We got a puppy last week. She is a Pit Bull/ and Chocolate Lab mix....BEAUTIFUL!!! We think she is between 3-4 months old. I don't think anyone ever tried to house break her. She was neglected and abused. We are having a hard time house breaking her. She hasn't quite figured out how to tell us she needs out. With her having pit in her we don't want to use too agressive training since we dont want her to get agressive. We take her out after she eats, and about every 1/2 hour to an hour, and as soon as she wakes up. Of course we are not always able to do this right away sometimes. And she is unable to hold it. Maybe she isn't as old as I think she is. I will find out next week when I take her to the Vet for her first visit. She loves being outdoors, but does not like being outside alone. I am hoping she gets the hang of potty training... soon. I haven't had a dog since I was a child. And I just remember that dog being able to tell you when she needed to go out. Any suggestions??
I have 2 pit / ? mixes and I adore 'em! Though neither are pups, they still had to get used to the rules in my home.
You might do better with a cage. Pits are very clean, especially in their own personal space and will rarely soil the area that they think of as home. Put your pup in the cage between potty trips outside and you may have less mistakes in the house.
The other thing is to train her that each part of your home is "home". Meaning - be sure to go in each room and spend some time there with her. If not, she'll think the closed off area is an "ok" spot to go potty because its not "home".
Hope that helps, it's going to be some work simply because she's young, but they're very smart and learn quick so be consistent and you'll be successful.

Crate training will be perfect. Many people think its mean to lock a pup up like that, but it really does make them feel secure. I potty trained my lat dog in less then a week using a crate. My newest puppy is for the most part potty trained, he's a lab mix, but he would rather not be in the crate unless its bedtime. Acutally he is such a mommas boy that he cant stand to not be near me. I got him a buddy the other night. She is just a mixed breed, not sure what. She also is not potty trained at all. I am her third home, and will be her last. She has a crate now too, and loves it. The dogs really do feel secure once they get used to the crate. It also keeps them safe whne eyes cant be on them. Talk to you Vet about it.
I had a chow mix, they can also be agressive, so I bell trained him. I hung a small christmas bell from a string by the back door. Everytime we took him out, we had him "ring the bell" with his nose. (at first we had to hold his little head and make his nose ring the bell.) Then-lots of praise and outside. More praise when he did what he was supposed to and back in. It only took a couple of weeks and that dog rang the bell everytime he wanted out. (no scratch marks, no barking-it was great). My golden retriever decided it was a cool way to be let out and she started ringing the bell on her own to be let out.
It also amazes your friends by the way!
Good luck
