Topic: Anyone in Ky want a puppy?
OT: Would u like a puppy? Well, we adopted 2 puppies at the pound the other day and brought them home. Our 6 yr old sheltie mix has been very cranky and pouty ever since. He has always been our only dog and isn't mean at all normally. He hasn't hurt the pups he just growls at them and is not acting like himself. Last night my 4 yr daughter was playing with him on her papaws porch (we were all outside with her) and Dan our sheltie snapped at her. I know that is because he's unhappy that we have puppies. So, anyone want a puppy? They are 6-8 weeks old, both female, had 2 of their shots, been wormed, and come with vouchers to get them fixed here in Etown or somewhere in Louisville, your choice. They also come with all the puppy food I have bought so far which is quite a bit, lol. One is solid white, fluffy, with blue eyes her name is Snowball, original right? The other little lady is tan with sort of black markings, shes not really got alot of black on her but its there her name is Lady. They are supposedly shepherd mixes. I put them on petfinder.com last night and was asking for a donation of $10 per pup cause thats what we gave at the pound and we have since then got their 2nd shot and wormed them. My hubby's wanting me to take them back to the pound Tuesday since tomorrow is a Holiday but I would rather find them a home. So if anyone wants them let me know. If u want to donate the $10 or whatever, its up to u. I am not asking for money. I just want them to have a good, loving home and not go back to the pound. I can email u pics if u want to see them and can meet u if u live very far from Etown. Hugs Angela

Red/blue heelers are hearding dogs. You are their "sheep" He will not be overly friendly with new "sheep" I have a red heeler, he does not like guys, and he takes a while to get used to new women, but not long, little kids are automaticlly accepted. In his mind we are his responsibility, and new people are just more "work". So he is not aggressive (unless they seem to pose a threat to us) with guys, just not warm. Time, treats, and time is all that work. It also helps with my dog if you just ignore him, pay attention to the people in the room, like they are just part of the "flock". Eventually they get it, but they are the most bull headed of breeds. (stubborn not stupid) Also it helps if your dog has a particular toy (mine will chase a ball for a bit) to have the other person play toss. Or whatever. Be real casual. Like you really could not care if the dog likes the stranger or not. If you make a big deal, they get more skiddish. Mostly, I just accepted that my dog will only warm up to the "flock", not anyone they are not exposed to very often. I have a second dog (see "ball dog" post) that is more friendly with outsiders (aka anyone with a ball) I wanted my second dog to be small (like toy dog size) so I would have a cuddle buddy and then my cattle dog as a friendly protector type dog. But the second dog, grew and grew and grew. Now I have two big ole boys. *sigh*

If I got up to go potty in the middle of the night and shut the bathroom door, I cant open it because there is 4 balls right in front of the door. Never enough ball. He has a fixation, Suggestions?

Topic: skiddish dog
hello friends. i just recently read a post re: a skiddish dog. my 8mos old lab/ blue heeler mix is also a bit skiddi**** occurs with most all strangers; and usually males as well. he is GREAT with other dogs and people he has had time to get to know. i just moved into a new house with new roommates about a month ago and he is finally becoming a LITTLE better around them. i have to admit that after i adopted him (when he was 6 mos old) i was in the process of moving and exposed him to a lot of travel and different environments for about 2 weeks. with those he knows, he is amazing with. he is not aggressive so to say, just cowers away from new folks and barks. we live in the city now, and i am trying to get him accustomed to the business and such.... we go on frequent runs. i have read up that giving strangers dog treats to give him works. any other tips i would love to have. i do understand this is a part of his personality... i just want to do what i can to help as well. thanks!!

Topic: RE: This week my dog has eaten....
I had trouble with my male going in the house too. My female was SO easy and was actually trained by the time I got her at 8 weeks, but the boy...geeze!! For awhile, I thought he was NEVER going to get it right. I honestly think its a boy thing...just like it is typical for human boys to take longer to potty train than girls, it takes longer for male dogs to be house broken. At least that has been my experience. Again, I kept him confined when I wasn't there to watch him. I lined the entire laundryroom floor with newspaper. That way if he had an accident, it was easy to clean up. Day by day, I made the area I covered with paper smaller until he was fully trained. We spent ALOT of time outside that summer and when we were inside, I took him out often, especially after meals. I always used the phrase "Go outside pee pee!" Then when he did his business outside, I said "good boy, go pee pee outside!" followed by lots of hugs and pets. Good luck with your pup!! Heather

Pappy = Papillion. Sort of looks like a long-haired Chihuahua. I forgot about Bitter Apple. I used it years ago with my boxer. I will go get some. Thanks for the reminder. Any ideas for getting him to stop pooping in the house? Grrrr again. Feisty Emm

Topic: RE: ~~~Pug problems~~~
Hi Michelle, I have a friend with a pug and she says the same thing about hers. He follows his mommy everywhere! I have two Newfoundlands (110 and 190 pounds) and they are the same way. If i get in the shower..they are sitting there watching, if I get up to go into another room, a parade follows behind me. I can't even pee without a dog following me in. However, I like to look at it this way.... I have yet to find the same companionship, loyalty, faithfullness, admiration and unconditional love that I get from my dogs in anyone else in my life. No matter what you say or do, or how much you weigh or what you look like, or how much money you have, they will always love you just the way you are. Oh yeah, they are also great listeners when I need someone to talk to and they think my signing is the bomb!! Heather

I'm sorry to hear about the chewing! It can be so frustrating. Ya gotta love the puppy years! LOL After my first one, I swore I would never do the puppy thing again (its like having an infant), but after 5 years, I missed having a "baby" in the house and got another one. I love my furkids more than anything, and would do it all over again, but the puppy stage is tough. My oldest dog was 3 before I gave her freedom in the house when I wasn't home or at night. Up until then she was gated into the laundry room. My youngest, who just turned 3, still sleeps in his "bachelor pad" as we call it. He loves it so much that he actually goes in on his own sometimes and puts himself to bed. Molly, my older one, is pretty good about not chewing things, but if she can get to a bar of soap, or to a box of tampons, she will steal them and hide them in the sofa cusions (don't ask me why she likes those two things LOL). And, gross as it is, she will take used tampons out of the trash can and eat them!!!!! I have to keep the wastebasket in the bathroom on top of the toilet so she doesnt get into it. Have you tried a product called Bitter Apple? It is sold in the pet stores and comes in cream or spray form. I prefer the spray. When they were pups, I would spray it on anything they showed interest in or attempted to chew and said "NO BITE!". One taste of that and they NEVER tried it again. Tucker (my 3 year old) actually started to chew on the back of a leather chair, I sprayed the spot, he took a wif (it smells horrible) and that was the end of that problem. I did taste it once (I was currious) and it truely is a horrible thing. I have to ask, what is a pappy poo? I am guessing part poodle, but what is the other part? Heather
