HI CJ. I work w/ dogs professionaly and I can tell you most people attribut nervous behavior to abuse. This is almost never true. Dogs similar to humans(but NOT THE SAME) are individuals with distinct personalities. Have you ever encountered and reluctant nervous person. Or an agressive person? When you vac, sweep etc.. do you try to avoid the dog? do you talk to him in soothing tones. if you do,stop. You are relaying to him that these are things to fear and that he must be kept and protected from. As the pet owner you and all humans in the house hold are the"alfa" dogs. No matter the size or appearance of the breed, they are all"wolves". The all respond to having a leader and a social order. If you do not take on this role and give in to your pets decisions it becomes confusing. Now, as the leader you can decide what should and will be done in his life and around him. Have your daughter bring him into the room you plan to sweep and have him stay. If he becomes upset and barks at it or turns from it. place him back and have him stay. Do not allow barking or other disruptive behavior during this time. That is not "good" behavior and deserves "correction" this can be done with a quick sharp, not painfull, yank of his choke collar. If used properly this is an indespensible training tool. But have a professional show you a proper fit how to put it on and how to use it. I know you love your baby like a person, but to be fair to dogs we must realize we are asking them to live in our world. Try to understand their way of thinking and have faith that things you might feel are harsh, may be so IF he were a human. As far as his agression, he is a terrier. Is this behavior mostly in your prsence and at your home. Some dogs wish to advise other dogs and some people this is theirs and youre not welcome. If I have been of any help feel free to contact me and would love to help you. I can never(as you might can tell) get enough of "dog talk" good luck.Jack's are awesome

My 17 month old Jack Russell Terrier is skiddish and he's been that way since we got him. We've had him since he was 6 weeks old and he is afraid of the broom...vacuum...laundry basket...towels... and I don't know what to do for him. We have never abused him and I only raise my voice when he tears up things, I use to spank him with a newspaper before he learned to go outside to potty. I have a 16 year old daughter who adores him as do I and we have only left him in the kennel once for 3 days. We are baffled by his fear of these items and we hate to see him run from them. Other than that he is aggressive with other dogs and most (not all) strangers. When I am home he stays under me and whines when I leave and whenever my daughter leaves to go somewhere he whines until I calm him down. Everyone thinks we have spoiled him excessively...any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Renee, Your girl just needs a little behavior therapy. You have to commit the time and effort but it should work out well. Go to the pet store and buy a book on dog behavior or look into hiring a behaviorist to help you. You have to extinguish the behavior. When she pees in the house you need to punish the behavior when it happens. It may get worse before it gets better (called an extinction burst) but it will get better. Best of luck and DONT GIVE UP! With love, Em

I have 2 great dane puppies. The female, Echo, is a harlequin and is roughly 9 months old. She weighs in at 78 lbs. She is a darling little princess. I've never seen another dog as prissy as she is. She's also very timid and needs lots of reassurances about life. She is currently eating about 6 cups of Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy food per day. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/ravaenwolf/Animals/000_0092.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/ravaenwolf/Animals/100_0103.jpg My male, Romulus, is black with the cutest set of ****eyed ears you have ever seen. He is 7.5 months old and weighs in at 88 lbs. He is a Mamma's Boy. He loves to lean already, is wonderful at warming your feet (even when you don't want them warmed) and is a big time food hound. He is eating about 7.5 cups of the same food per day. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/ravaenwolf/Animals/100_0101.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/ravaenwolf/Animals/100_0136.jpg I feed my two 3 times a day. They are both perfectly potty trained and are in crates while we're not here. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is that they need very little exercise, and then a lot of sleep. They are the most laid-back dogs I've ever owner. They're also shadow-dogs. They love to stay right next to you, which can be really complicated when you try to walk. Lots of chew toys to keep them from gnawing things like crown molding. Other than that....good luck and congrats on your new baby!! Jennya

Renee, Try calling your vet to get some suggestions as to why she is doing this bad behavior. Its probably separation anxiety the vet may have some medication he can give her to calm her down; also get with petsmart and signup for dog training this will help get her back in line. Remember you are her alpha dog and she must learn who is in charge if you let her continue this behavior it'll only get worse. She will learn you must first be trained so she can be trained. If you can't afford the training classes go on line and search for training techniques on the computer also watch whisper on discovery channel he's a dog trainer and he tells you how to train your dog and how to teach them to change bad behaviors. Hope this helps! karen

Good Morning all - I need some help fast! I have 2 mixed breed pit bull dogs, 1 male about 4 yrs old and a female who is about 2 yrs old. Since they were both strays and in a shelter, we can only guess at their ages. The problem is my girl, Noni. She is always desperate to beloved. Licks you constantly yet is very demanding and can be down right pushy when she wants her way. She has taken to peeing in the house lately, though she was always very good about going outside from the time I 1st got her. I'd say this problem started about the time after I went back to work after my WLS. So about the end of March or so. She has lately taken to getting in my roomates room and peeing on her bed or on her floor. Her room stays closed most of the time to keep this from happening, but last nite for example, as soon as she got up to use the bathroom, Noni took off like a flash and went and peed on her bed!!! I know I wouldn't be happy at all if my dog was doing this to me - I have to find a way to help Noni to stop but have no clue where to start. Another example is that she was outside for about 3 hours laying round in the sun (Noni loves to stretch out in the sun), when she came in she peed on the floor. What's a mommy to do?? HELP! I don't want to see her go back to the shelter. But she seems to be a little off somehow. THe peeing is the worse but there's more; running away, teaching my good calm boy to be bad, tearing up the house if left out of her cage during the day, etc. One more time HELP! And thanks Renee

I took in a stray male Beagle and he is so cool but my husband won't let me keep him Thank God for "Save a Dog" in my area they are helping me find him a good home. We have two other dogs already. A border collie and a Yorkie. My friend claims up and down that Beagles whine all the time. This little guy only whines when he has to go out side to use the bathroom. Donna 338/219 -119
