Topic: sheltie attack
I have an adorable little sheltie who just loves to hop up into my lap unnanounced. I usually don't see her coming. How am I gonna handle this when I get back after surgery ? Assuming I ever have surgery, the red tape seems insurmountable. Anyone ? Sue

Topic: update...adding new dog
I posted a little bit ago and asked for advice on adding another dog to my home. I am happy to say that we adopted Max, the 5yr old beagle who needed some help with his weight. Balto, my border collie, immediately tried to kill him. I took Balto straight to the pet store to purchase a muzzle. I muzzled Balto for a few hours....he settled down and seemed to understand that Max is not a threat. Unmuzzled my dog and the two of them are now doing well together. I really thought it would take longer than that. They do not love each other yet....but give it time. Balto and Max are sharing space well! Thank goodness.

Topic: My Baby Has a Stone! Surgery Required!
Here I am just two weeks post op trying to recover and I learn my baby (Bichon - Beau - 10 yrs) has a large stone requiring surgery! Has anyone else been through this surgery with their pet? Any advice or encouragement you can offer is appreciated.

Kim:
My 10 year old Bichon (Beau) is my baby! Bichons are incredible dogs: smart, determined, stubborn, playful, loving. You will be very happy with your new baby.
Ear infections are common. Get your baby used to having ears cleaned now. Brush your baby's coat now, too, so she will enjoy it later. Brush teeth now. Anything you want to do later, start doing now: nails, teeth, coat, etc. Make it fun, like a game, so she will not think twice about it later.
I get Beau groomed every 6 weeks. They have hair (not fur) and do not shed, and they have no dander. They are hypo-allergenic pets!!!!
Skin allergies are common with Bichons, too. Use medicated or moisturizing shampoos (oatmeal and tea tree are good). Expect at least on "hot spot" a year in the spring/summer as your baby gets older. You'll learn lots about these later!
Good luck and congrats again on your new addition. I know you will love your Crystal as much as I love my Beau.
Topic: RE: advice for adding a new dog
Hi Jacque,
Well we visited the prospective new addition...fell in love
and he is in our home. It was touch and go for a bit.....my current dog (Balto, the border collie mix) tried to eat him.....went straight for the throat. I immediately went to the pet store and got a muzzle. A few hours with the muzzle and my dog has become civilized. He is now tolerating Max and is now without the muzzle. I guess he is a quick learner. All this in just 4 hours.
Max is extremely overweight. He is the smaller version of the beagle. A very small dog.....but he is obese. We have a lot of work ahead of us ...rehabbing the beagle. Oh...and his former family spoke Polish...to top it off....English is his second language. Had to learn a few commands in Polish!
