How many carbs post-op?

I know that as a DS'er we absorb carbs so I am wondering if there is a guideline as to how much one should have in a day or not go beyond? What do you limit yourself to?

Oh, the evil carbs. Our Roz describes them very well. It varies. You should discuss it with your surgeon if you remember. Some don't limit them, some do. Some lose ok without limiting them, some need to restrict carbs. I should have restricted mine more because I had more to lose than most. I had lots of surgeries, nausea, this and that, which seems to have kept me stalled a good bit of the time. I'm still trying to lose more. I am down 133 lubs, which is good, but I still have some to go. Here's what I do, but we each have to find our own way: I like to stay under 50 carbs a day, usually stay under 100, always stay under 200 - but that's not done because I watch it. If I get up close to 200 a day, I've been eating whatever I want. I just have never gone over 200 since the surgery. If we are eating right, especially just after surgery, there isn't room for many carbs. I remember on the drive home from Omaha, I had some of those cheese peanut butter crackers in my purse. I could eat 1/3 of one at a time. I ate one half of a chicken wing at a time - either the drumette or the other part. So ya see, there isn't a lot of room in there to be worrying about carbs in the beginning. If you get your protein in, there isn't room for many carbs. HTH (hope that helps, but I feel like I am babbling!) Jeanie

I super low carb it normally -- especially during the losing period. I kept it definitely below 50 net carbs and usually around 25. Keeping my protein at 100g/day helps me rebuild muscle and gave me the long lanky (yet curvy look) that I have always dreamed about. Nowadays I have one carb-heavy day a week but just about always stay below 100g net and the heavy carbs are still low-carb, no soy versions of "the real thing." Most of the time I keep my carbs around 50 net carbs. Most of those carbs include whole grains and fruits and veggies. I avoid soy flour and soy protein for the most part as I have thyroid issues and soy is known -- and has proven for me -- to induce sluggishness in energy and weight loss. Now this is what works for me and what keeps me feeling great. In fact, the days I intentionally indulge, I don't always feel as well and may spend a little more time in the bathroom but I'm on maintenance now and still have to find what will ultimately serve me healthwise and weight-stabilization-wise without regaining. I hope this helps.

Okay, well, I'm early out... so take that into consideration. But for me, I don't limit my carbs per se. I focus on protein and stay away from those carbs that cause me intestinal distress (bread, pasta). At this point, I'm happy with my results -- I'm 3 months out and have lost about 50% of my excess weight. However, I am ready at any moment to begin restricting carbs to acheive my weight loss goal. I feel I am very blessed to continue to lose even eating the amount of carbs I do -- how many carbs I eat, I don't really know. I try to eat at least 100 grams of protein and then throw in whatever carbs sound good to me that day! Some people really have to restrict their carb intake in order to lose. However, I think they are in the minority. You'll probably have to wait and see what catagory you fall into. Lola

I try to avoid Carboman and Sugar**** They are my enemies. My ongoing goal is to stay around 50-100 gr/day. My protein: 120gr/day. My water: no less than 64oz. I don't care what people say about not restricting their carbs and having been able to reach goal in the twinkle of an eye. I guarantee you they will face more regain later than those who do attempt some restriction. Flame, flame, flame. . . . . Roz--century clubbed at 6 months p/o 246/127

Recommendation: as few carbs as you yourself can comfortably live with. I'm almost 7 months out, and I'm a former carb addict and recovering Type II diabetic. I limit myself to under 100 grams a day, preferably more like 70-80 grams, and anything under that I view as fabulous. If I eat fewer than 50 grams a day, I want to binge on carbs, so going lower than that does not work for me. Everyone has to find his or her own answer on this one. For what it's worth, my own aim is actually *not* to get to the lowest rrange of weight recommended for a woman of my height (5'6"), as the combination of "thin" and "middle age" does not look good to my eyes. My surgeon will be happy if I reach 180, I'll be happy if I reach 160, and I'm *aiming* for 155 as ideal. Right now I'm 193. Alison http://deluzy.blogspot.com/

I don't really count them at all, but I can say it doesn't amount to much more than a few bites each meal. The only thing I count is protein. The rule of thumbs is the order of importance in which you eat... Protein first, then veggies, and if you have room, you can add a little starch.

I have to say...first off I hate this reply feature that I can only "reply" to one person when I want to reply to everyone as a group...grrrr!! Anyhow, thank you for your responses! I will be sure to ask my surgeon on Friday when I have my consultation. I am jotting down questions as they pop into my head so this will be one of them for sure! Thanks all!!
