I had my lap band done in July 07.  Is it safe to have a MRI done?  I would think that it would be but I'm not sure what kind of material is in the port and what the doctor uses to attach the port insidethe the body.  I can call my doctor on Monday and ask but I hope someone can tell me now. Thanks,  kim

Remmeber, these are medical devices. THey do not ahve materials that will prevent you having an MRI. I have staples and stuff in my body and not once has it impacted me having an MRI and they were put in in the 80's. The band has NO metal parts in it.

You can let them know you have one but you will be fine. I already posed that question to my surgeon and he said a lapband will not prevent me form getting an MRI done or cause complications. I too have some surgical steel in me from clamped tubes instead of the old cut and tie method. They have been there for 20+ years and after several MRI's they are still there.

My lapband info said you can have an MRI with the lapband. I went for an MRI recently and the tech had to look it up, because she had never had a payient with one. They are fine for MRI but she said there is a certain very strong MRI that you cannot have, I forgot the units she said. But she said my MRI (of the knee) was 3 and the limit of whatever units is 20.
