RNY on 10/05/94
OK, just so you know, I've lived with my RNY pouch and shorty common channel for 13 yrs and I don't find it to be a handicap. Inconvenient sometimes when I want to mow down the whole table, but otherwise, really, it's not the end of the world.

Honest.

If you can have your regulation DS, good, but if not, don't freak out.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

Just wanted to say you have a great doc there and he has always done his best and what was best for his pateint. He crosses all his T's and dots all his I's that is just the way he is.  He has done 2 surgeries on me and going to do another later this year for me, I have healed very well never had any leaks or open incessions.  I watched him change my feeding tube and stich it to me and let me tell you, when he tied the knot it hurt worse then when the needle was going in.  He did that in the hospital bed with no pain meds,...he's fast too.  All I can say is I have trusted him with my life and have never regretted it.  I hope your surgery goes well and everything comes out the way you want.  Sending good thoughts your way, and wishing you the best.  Oh! by the way if you just ask him he will draw you a picture of what he is going to do and what he thinks the problem is that he will have.  He used the paper off the table a time or 2 with me, of course I ask lots of questions because I want to know everything.  Just make notes of what you need to ask him when you go back the next time and he will tellyeah.  I know they try to hurry you through but if you just tell them you want to know this or that they will tell you, and if they don't get it where you understand it the first time just keep asking, till you understand everything don't be shy,....it is your body. I hope this helps and best of luck to you. Yes, I do like Dr. Anthone alot.  Even my mom does and she hated my last WLS surgeon.  I know he'll take good care of me -- he's explained alot of things to me and done it very well. His concern is genuine. I just wish I would've done it this way the first time around -- over 3 years ago. jayme

J.Lynn, I'm going to tell you something about Dr. Anthone ...  He is VERRRY conservative.  He also doesn't make big promises ... especially to revisions ... but ... most of the revisions who have posted here in the past have found that he has been able to do the full DS on them.  Anthone is very skilled and if he can't do the full DS on a revision, then no one can! PRE OPS ...  Want a surgery that has the least chance of long-term re-gain, is BEST at curing your Diabetes (98%+), removes much of the hunger hormone Ghrelin, NO DUMPING, NO MARGINAL ULCERS and NO STOMA / STRICTURES? CURIOUS WHY I CHOSE THE DS?  VISIT MY PROFILE.

Just so you know Dr. Anthone created the VSG portion of the DS.  He is one hell of a great surgeon.  You couldn't be in better hands.  Now we just pray he gets in there and everything is hunky dory.

His assessment sounds safe, practical and erring on the side of caution.  I would have been happy with an RNY stomach and DS guts if that would have been the case. Congratulations on the date!  It's right around the corner!

Jamie_ I just want you to know that Dr. Anthone told me the same thing.  I have the nissen wrap at the top of my stomach, so he gave me a 20% chance of getting a rny stomach due to scar tissue.  I am comfortable with whatever he has to do because he is one of the best.  Read this: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=13 56374 This study basically says it isn't the lack of the pyloric valve that causes dumping, it is more likely the intestines that are bypassed.  The BPD patients, BTW, have no pyloric valve, just like in a rny pouch.   Dr's Prachand and Alverdy at U of C both told me the same thing..... that no matter what I read on the internet, I will not be able to tell the difference with the modified stomach because I was still getting the DS intestines.   So rest assured, you are in very safe, capable hands!!!
