Can we not lose it ALL??

I almost feel stupid asking this question...but I really don't know the answer and I really want to!! So I appreciate your input on this! So I have been reading about how with DS you are more likely to lose a greater percentage of your excess weight. On the article on the home page of OH right now is says that with DS you can typically lose 85% of your excess weight and 65% with RNY... So my question is why? I mean I realize that some people lose it all and I hope to be one of those people, but it is it saying that for most people or people with a lot of weight to lose that they can't lose it all? That just seems strange to me, does altering our body like this put some kind of cap on it? (that seems so ridiculous to think, but I really don't get it) Thanks everyone!

I think they're talking averages using a large number of people starting at all kinds of weights and having all kinds of issues. My own surgeon's averages say 70-75% in the first year and 80-90% in the 2-3 year period. I'm 100% in the first year but I started as a light weight. "Your mileage may vary" (YMMV) should be stamped all over the OH article. Hang tight! Gina

Oh ok so, it is most likely possible to lose it all, but over time and maybe not all in the 1st year? Thanks so much!

Like Gina, I was also a lightweight.  By 6 months I had lost 50% of my weight and figured I was right on course.  Then in February, things came to a screeching halt.  I'm talking about a 3 MONTH stall no matter what I ate.  I tried more protein, more fats, more exercise.  You name it, I did it....but still that scale wouldn't budge.  Fortunately, I was at a weight I could live with but it was still disappointing to see the same number week after week.  FINALLY two weeks ago, the scale started to move again.  Granted, I'm still the tortise and not the hair, but I'll take a one lb a week loss any day.  My body is, and always has been stubborn about holding onto this weight and there is certainly a chance that I won't get to goal.  It's hard to predict what your results will be but I have to say I would do it again in a heartbeat.  Good luck. I'm a lightwt. here too-and I think I am going through what you just did! I am out 6 months and have lost almost 69% EWL, but keep losing and gaining the same 3 lbs!  It is so frustrating! Whart finally broke the cycle for you?

Hi Hedy, Truthfully, it was just time.  I had tried every stall buster known to man and....nothing.  I had been a slower loser right from the start but I really think my body just needed time to regroup.  Hang in there.  I know it's discouraging but I'm sure it will pass. Teri

Thanks Teri, I feel like my body is comfy here for the moment after losing so much. I do need to get the last 20 off though!
