What is a low-fat diet after a DS?
OK, I'm just recovering from a bout of pancreatitis...ouch! The cause is not quite clear, but even though I'm not a heavy drinker, alcohol is the most likely culprit. The treatment is to not eat or drink for a few days, IV fluids, and pain meds, then slowly reintroduce liquids, then a low-fat diet. So I'm out of the hospital now and am supposed to eat a low fat diet. If we don't absorb but about 20% of the fat we eat, then isn't our diet low fat already? I don't know how long the diet restriction lasts anyway, I go back to the GI doctor on Monday. So until then, I guess I'll eat less fat or just less. I'm just relieved I'm no longer vomiting and in pain.
i have a young friend with type 1 diabetes who had pancreatitis and i know how sick she was, she was in the hospital for three months! i hope you feel and get much better soon!
and with that said, i think this is a definite time to talk to your surgeon and maybe a nutritionist who deals with WLS and DS patients. its a fine line and not something you want to mess up considering how sick this can make you.
good luck. please call your doctor about it!
pancreantitis is awful! my aunt has a severe case, she wound up in a life-threatening coma for awhile, and now, tho recovering has literally over a million dollars in medical bills. my dad decided to get tested after that, and he has it too, along with diabetes. and while it's great that they caught his early and can treat it with medication/diet (tho my mom doesn't cook right for him) he still has to pay over $600/mo for prescriptions after insurance.
i certainly hope yours isn't that bad. please be very careful about it and monitor it closely. i'm glad you're on the mend, it's very a very serious condition. take care.
I don't see how you *could* go with a true lowfat and not pay for it by being constipated. I'd def. give Husted a ring and see what he has to say about this. I'm glad you're okay, sorry you're going through this though!

We are living that anything we eat that is high fat is low fat to us, due to our digestive system. Even if you eat a lot of high fat food, it is really low fat food being that we malabsorption almost all of the fat digested. Low fat means nothing to us as is high fat means nothing to us as well. So, eating a diet that is high fat is still a low fat diet to us. In answering our question:
If we don't absorb but about 20% of the fat we eat, then isn't our diet low fat already?
Yes it is. Some medical personnel still don't understand our DS lifestyle and the relationship to food that we malabsorb a great deal of it, especially the fat contents.
Great minds discuss ideas.
Average minds discuss events.
Small minds discuss people.
I'd call Dr. Husted. I think it depends why they want you on low-fat. If it is because the fat moving through your stomach and intestines can cause trouble that is different than if they are worried about fat being absorbed. Dr. Husted should be able to clarify this.
I hope you feel better soon!
