I'm a revision from an RNY and my Poo & Gas smell is God Awful,  its gotten really bad lately because I'v added carbs & sugar to my diet to stop the weight loss. But my real question is what make the Poo burn my Bum ??? Is there anything I can take ?? Please let me know again the different treatment you all use to control you Poo & Gas issues I need a refresher course.
Thanks ahead of time

Spicy foods? Runny/gritty (fiber) stools are harsh on delicate skin. Try flushable moist wipes to clense instead of harsh toilet paper.
Duodenal Switch hybrid due to complications.

Leslie - I'm just going back to what our pediatrician always said when our babies would get bad, red butts. Their poo was always more acidic at those times. We would always go back to the BRAT diet - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. It always helped.

Now, I'm not postop so I cannot tell you if this works for a DS'er or not, but it's what first comes to my mind.

And I bookmarked this post from a while back. Maybe it will have some helpful info in it for you.

Oh, man. I'm so sorry you're suffering. That's the worst. I've heard increased fiber intake recommended many times here as a good way to control the burny heiny. I don't really understand what causes that, although I'm pretty sure it has something to do with bile in the stool.

Are you taking a good Probiotic? That's the most common way to control the poo & gas issues. I recommend the Garden of Life Primal Defense Ultra.

What about Flagyl? It sounds like you're due for a good course of it.

Good luck! I hope you get it under control soon.

Generally, burny heinie is a result of bile acids that are not complexed with fats or other things in our food.  Are you eating enough fat?  Alternatively, eat more fiber to bind the bile acids.  A third and less desirable alternative is to get your doctor to prescribe a product called Questran (cholestyramine), which is usually prescribed to lower cholesterol, because it binds to cholesterol and the similar compounds in bile acids to prevent them from being absorbed -- the problem is, it will prevent even more the limited absorption of the fats we need to absorb, as well as some of our fat-soluble vitamins.

Another thing that seems to precipitate burning butts: tomato products.  You might want to avoid those for a bit.

Are you taking probiotics?  If not, you should be -- it may help with the odor.

The bypassed portion of the intestine is not responsible for carrying food; rather, it is responsible for carrying digestive juices from the liver and the pancreas. Making up more than half of total intestinal length, the bypassed portion of intestine joins the food limb at the final 75-100 cm of intestine known as the common limb. The common limb is the only portion of the intestines that is capable of absorbing fats, starches and complex carbohydrates.

The excess bile acids from the liver are excreted, and if your gall bladder is absent,  and they do burn when exiting. Any time any of us go to long without eating there will be less food in the common channel for the acids to bind too. It is just not the outer anal skin, I get really bad burning about 2-3 inches back in. On days like that I add fiber in at breakfast to try and firm things up for a few days.

Many of us will note more burning  of stool in the AM---less food traveling through, more bile.

The best things I did for myself were:
Eat  a small protein snack, and drink a big,big 24oz or more of fluid  the hour or two before going to bed. This gives it something to bind too, and dilutes the acid with more fluids going through the system. The only negative is that I do get up about 3 or 4 am to pee.

Lastly you do not need to apologize for suffering with this. As many people that swear they do not have any problems with bowel movements on here- frequency, burning or smell: there are probably many like you and me that do have problems.

I have struggled with this since surgery. I call it the "Burning Ring of Fire" sung in the style of Johnny Cash. I have a twisted sense of humor at times, but it keeps me from crying about it.
Gratitude is my attitude

It hasn't been mentioned but if it's just at the "end" you can put on some diaper ointment (like Desitine), and if it goes in just a "bit" deeper you can you a Prep H suppository a little bit before you poo. It helps coat the tissue to prevent burning.

As for the poo and gas odors, have you tried diet modification? Eliminating the food that sets you off normally helps, also regular use of probiotics and sometimes a course of flagyl. When you go to the bathroom, a drop of "Just a Drop" or "Poo Pori" really help.

Hubby and I both had burney hiney and once we started mixing Benefiber in our drinks every morning it went right away (like within 2 days).  I now by the generic Wal-mart version of Benefiber and it works great.

As for gas the probotics will really help any gas/smell issues.

Good luck!
