Ok all....I'm doing research, need experiences with the DS.
Here's what I know so far:
Certain foods (and sometimes ALL food) give you unbearable VERY stinky gas
Revision from RNY to DS has LOTS of "could" happens
Longer surgery
Longer Hospital
Longer time off work
"Most" people LOVE their DS and would do it again in a heartbeat.
A Lot of people wish they'd never done it (because of the "brown cloud")
I would rather be 300 lbs than have gas issues (I'm such a prude!)
So....now is your chance...................as JOHNNY # 5 said "Need INPUT!"

Pre-opI had certain foods that caused me to have gas...so this isn't new
RNY & DS both "could" have gas issues as well as diarrhea etc....I had those issues moreso as a pre-op than a post-op!
In the hands of a skilled surgeon, the DS is as safe as any other surgery, WLS or not!
Brown cloud? Is this the gas thing again? Really.....RNYers have just as much issues, if not moreso, than DSers regarding this.
It seems you are stuck worrying about the gas issues rather than your health....maybe you aren't ready for DS?? I dunno as I don't even know you.....
good luck in your research

I don't need anyone to remind me to keep myself in check
I'm entitled to reply to you in any way I see fit.....if that offends you I can't be responsible for that
you did indeed withhold information, but that likely wouldn't have changed my response to you.
And I stand by my stance that if you are so concerned about gas thatyou'd rather stay unhealthy, then don't get the DS ??
That's the fact as I see it
I do wish you well, honest...and if you pursue the DS I'll be here to support you 100%...but I don't candy-coat sooooo...just a warnin' LOL
I sincerely wish you GOOD LUCK going forward - I hope you find what you are looking for!

I've never had unbearable stinky gas -
stinky gas, yes, but mostly avoidable. It's never stopped me from having something I really wanted to eat.
I had revision from the band to the DS, but, yes, revision from the rny to DS can be much more complicated. It's best to get a surgeon who is committed to the full "takedown" of the rny and start over again to do the full ds. Otherwise, you still end up with the same pouch issues a rnyer is suspect to. I don't think the recovery time is any different than the other forms of surgery, it's just the surgery time that could be longer - and the chance for "could happens" is larger - leaks and such, perhaps, and issues with adhesions and scar tissues which could occur with any major revision.
I don't know of but a handful of people that say they wished they'd never done it. Probably even less than that who said the only reason they wouldn't do it is the gas.
Distal RNY folks can also have their own gas issues - anyone with a shortened gut possibly might.
I'm wondering - you are a potential revision? Are you currently 300 or is that just a figure of speech? If you are a revision prospect, what went wrong with your original surgery?

300 was a figure of speech. I'm @ 279.
I had open RNY on 11-22-99.
I had a scope done last Tues and the doc said my pouch was stretched. Won't know more until next Wednesday. (My B-friend doesn't understand the in's and out's of my surgery so this is the only thing he understood from the doc after the scope)
I don't have much issues w/gas, but I do know fresh fruit and veggies do it to me, so I either save that for the weekend when I'm outside a lot, or I steam the veggies first.
So you are saying with a DS is a trial and error thing too? Simply, if it gives you gas, then DON'T eat it???
I'm see a pattern here....and I'm laughing at myself about this. DUMPING didn' seem to keep me from eating sweets....but if it gives me gas....STAY THE HECK AWAY FROM IT!
I'm not a big sweet eater, so no that's not what made me fail. I just don't have the whole pic yet...and I'm dying to go to the doc earlier! But I'll have to wait. Patience is NOT my strong point.
