The good, the bad and the ugly of DS
hmm.... you said (your last paragraph):
(by the way, if you look at the left hand side of the screen you'll see that I'm "seeking revision". So the fact that I didn't include that in my first post...well, I figured everyone would see that I was indeed "seeking revision" so for that I do apologize for not spelling it out)
To that, I say....
if you're going to ***** about something like that.... MAKE SURE IT'S THERE FIRST
there's no mention of ANY surgery in any vicinity of your avatar,,,,
here it is cut and pasted:

I don't see "seeking revision" anywhere...

A lot of what you say is correct when you are a 'new' DS. Let's say the first year or so. After that you know not to eat the cabbage, broccoli, whatever, that gives you gas. At 6 years post-op, I don't have any more gas than I did pre-op. Occasionally it's stinky but not 'brown cloud' disgusting. Over time, my body has adjusted and most foods have no affect on me anymore in the cloud department. The only exception is SF gummy bears. Those do it to me every time.
For me the DS has not been a free ride to skinny. I had to work to lose the weight and work to keep it off. We are all different. Some people get the free ride to skinny and have other issues. Just like with the RNY some people dump when they look at a dessert and others can eat them all day long. Go figure. I think you have to be willing and able to adapt to your particular issues post-op. There's always a solution.

Hijack - The sugar alcohol in the sf gummis does such a number on me I practically have post traumatic stress disorder from it. I repeatedly tried them in determination that it could be ANYTHING ANYTHING but the gummis causing it. I can eat absolutely anything but sf gummis, and am still mourning the loss of my beloved gummis.
You seem like you have a lot of the same major gas/bowel concerns that I had pre-DS.
I am only 2.5 months post-op, but so far the gas/poo has been fine...really. I have never once had diarrhea, and I definitely don't have a 'brown cloud' surrounding me, lol.
I have found that I DO get bad gas pains/increased gas odor if (and only if) I eat something made with white flour, but that's it. So I just steer clear of that crap.
My hospital stay was 3 days.
My recovery was great (I had a lap DS)... I felt awesome by 2 weeks post-op.
Please don't let the fear of gas prevent you from pursuing the DS...the gas is so preventable. And, if you want to indulge in white carbs, there are pills (like Devrom) that can "de-stink" your gas/BMs.
Good Luck!

Hi, Diana,
I had a RNY in 1998 also and am planning a revision too. We're smart to do our homework" now. Here's my perspective-hope it helps.
Foods/Gas
There are a number of foods that give me more malodorous gas now than before the RNY. This is also true as some of us age, with or without a malabsorptive WLS . My husband and I do not pass gas in front of each other either. I avoid troublesome foods and have air freshener handy. There are some especially made for "medical" odors.
Longer Surgery
True, because we are revisions. Other factors include skill and experience of the surgeon, laparoscopic or open approach, amount of scar tissue present, size of patient, circulation to pylorus, etc etc. We need to be certain to get a good revision surgeon
Longer Hospitalization
Not necessarily. This will depend more on the approach (laparoscopic vs open) and individual response and recuperation to the surgery. My RNY (open) had me in the hospital 4 days, but due to complications, I was re-hospitalized for 3 weeks. And this was with an experienced RNY surgeon. Sometimes complications just happen!
Longer time off work
See above
Good luck to you and I wish you the best!
