The good, the bad and the ugly of DS

Pre-op here.
I would rather have a fart in front of others then have a stroke or heart attach in front of others.
It's a no brainer to me. IMO

It really *is* a no brainer, but obviously not for everyone. Oh well.

Well honey, to be human is to fart. RNY'ers have gas issues. DS'ers have gas issues. HUMANS have gas issues.

So, I guess you are not a candidate for either WLS or being human, eh?

Hey, if you'd rather weigh 300 lbs than fart, you be my guest. Come talk to me when you're dying of comorbidities.

I'm three weeks out from my DS and I will tell you that I've not had any regrets.

My surgery, lap DS non-revision was about 4 hours. It went perfectly. Within 3 hours of leaving the OR I was up and walking. I was released from the hospital 24 hours after leaving the OR.

I have one more week of time off from work then I'm back full-time. I imagine I'll be tired but I think it's doable.

I've found since my surgery that I'm more in-tune with my body. I notice things I may not have noticed before. My body talks a lot. I get a lot of rumblies in my stomach and it's not all bad. Since I'm still predominantly on liquids (some softs) my BM's tend to be very liquidy. This doesn't bother me and it doesn't smell thank you very much. I have had gas where I've needed to fart but it's not rip roarin manly contest type farts, it's soft and quiet and doesn't smell.

I can understand not wanting to pass gas in front of a loved one. My not boyfriend was going to be with me after my surgery and I was so worried because I didn't want to be embarassed about my gas or BMs.  In the end, he wasn't able to be here and I realized that I'd rather have him and farts than not have him at all. If my having gas and BMs is going to make me healthier and allow me to live a full and complete life with him then that's something I'm willing to do.

I'm not sure where you got your information, but it seems pretty exaggerated.

You wrote:

Here's what I know so far:
Certain foods (and sometimes ALL food) give you unbearable VERY stinky gas

Certain foods can give you gas, but not "unbearable". And I have never heard of a DSer getting gas from "ALL" food. It's only high carb foods or fake sugars.

Revision from RNY to DS has LOTS of "could" happens
Longer surgery
Longer Hospital
Longer time off work

That's all true. After having an RNY, the stomach needs to be repaired and reattached before the DS can be performed. It is a much more complicated surgery than just a first-time DS.

"Most" people LOVE their DS and would do it again in a heartbeat.

True.

A Lot of people wish they'd never done it (because of the "brown cloud")

I don't know who you've been talking to, but I can honestly say I have NEVER heard of anyone who wished they'd never done it because of the gas. And I've been on these boards for quite a while now. (I've heard of people having surgical complications which may have them wish they'd never done it--I mean, this is major surgery.) But wishing they'd never had the surgery because of the GAS?!!! Even if you get bad gas, it's really not so bad that you wouldn't want the DS. If someone you know has gas that bad, then something is wrong.

Oh, and there are things you can take for the gas...if that's your greatest concern. So you have options available if you really don't want to deal with controlling gas by watching what you eat.

Welcome! Stick around and learn more about the DS.

Thank you...I plan to stick around, If I can get through all the flaming about FARTING!  Ha!

I know you guys mean well....You can tell how passionate I am about that, by how quickly I am at defending myself!  (I'm sure that's why you guys are defending DS so much....because you are so passionate about it!!!)

Anyway, the nurse that I had last Tuesday, is one of that told me she simply does not eat when she's going to work, because EVERYTHING she eats gives her gas....every single thing...even Jello.

She also said she wished she'd never done it.

But you know what, people said bad things about RNY B4  had it done, but I did it anyway....and I don't regret it at all.

My regrets are, that I didn't LEARN.....learn to love water, learn to love exercise, and learn to LOVE ME.....THIN....so I'm back to size 20 pants.

Anyway, your $.02 is worth a MILLION!

It sounds like that nurse needs to read about c-diff.  A round or two of antibiotics can fix her problem if she only knew about it.

I'm not sure whether someone has already posted this, but several folks behind the scenes did some research, and we believe that the "nurse" she is referring to is Joyce, an "OH support group leader" (whateverthefuck that means), and she is NOT a DSer, she is some sort of hybrid, *******ized ERNY with a 50 cm common channel from Schlessinger.  She has NO authority to speak for what happens to DSers.  NONE.
