The good, the bad and the ugly of DS

When someone comes on here telling us we fart brown clouds, s/he becomes fair game. She's either a troll or needs to learn some social skills.

But you know what? If you don't like my language, or anyone else's, use your ******g block button and quit your ******g whining.

I can only speak for myself-I had an mini gastric bypassin '99 and my farts clear the house, which they did not before surgery.
I'd rather hang out in a brown cloud then the following:

Crawl up the stairs to bed, heart pounding, light-headed etc...

Go through the turnstiles sideways and still have to suck in my breath/straddle the damn thing

NOT be able to play with my grandkids

You know what, the list could go on forever...the point is, gas is something I can deal with, dying-not an option. For me, I just had to decide what was more important to me, coz I won't smell so great if I die anyways...
Just my 2 cents..

I wouldn't expect any more gas with the DS than your experiencing today with your RNY.  I find it to be very controllable, really.  I'm a corporate trainer, so I'm often in front of groups, and this is NOT and issue for me.   I know what affects me and I avoid it or time it accordingly.

The three biggest causes for gas:
Simple carbs (flour and sugar)
Lactose intolerances
Artificial Sweeteners

Hi there,
My husband had the DS in June of 2007, and I had Revision surgery on April 7th of this year.  I had the VBG when I was 15, and I threw up almost everyday.  Since my DS Revision, I have never thrown up.  I would have had the surgery just for that reason alone.  Anyway, my husband has dropped from 437 to 191, and so far, I have lost 116 pounds since April.  I still have another 100 to go, but I'm happy.

The DS requires a commitment to vitamins. My husband's gas is a lot worse than mine.  He eats sweets and doesn't really monitor his carbs.  I on the other hand rarely eat sweets, and I try to watch my carb intake.  I'm not a freak about it, but I am aware of what goes in my mouth.  I also take Probiotics 3 times a day, which I feel is helpful.  I have honestly not had an embarrassing episode with gas, as far as in "public."  My husband and I fart in front of each other, although his is more frequent.

The DS is a big decision.  Do I think it's worth it? Absolutely and 100% YES!  I feel it has saved our lives and both of us would do it over again without hesitation.  Nothing in life is perfect, but the DS is pretty darn close.  Just be sure if you do go the DS Revision route that you are willing to take your vitamins, do your follow-up labs, etc.

I wish you the best!

Hi Diana, I had the DS 1 month ago and the gas is not as bad as I thought it would be. I can control it and my biggest fear was "passing gas" at work, and nothing like that has happened yet. Of course this may be different than others, but it really is not a problem at all. In the first two weeks it was "smelly" but now not as much.

Ok all....I'm doing research, need experiences with the DS.

Here's what I know so far:
Certain foods (and sometimes ALL food) give you unbearable VERY stinky gas
Revision from RNY to DS has LOTS of "could" happens
Longer surgery
Longer Hospital
Longer time off work
"Most" people LOVE their DS and would do it again in a heartbeat.
A Lot of people wish they'd never done it (because of the "brown cloud")

I would rather be 300 lbs than have gas issues (I'm such a prude!)

So....now is your chance...................as JOHNNY # 5  said "Need INPUT!"

Msgrneyes1970,

Since you say you're doing research, methinks you should re-think your sources.

Sometimes ALL FOOD gives stinky gas?  Where did you hear such a thing?

What do you mean by revisioni have lots of COULD happens?

The longer surgery, hosptial and time off of work has many variables depending on surgeon's experience, your medical condition, type/number of adhesions from prior surgery, etc.

Most people LOVE their DS should be more like ALL DSers LOVE their DS.  Hang out here a few days and look at posts/signatures and even user ids like mine, for example.

Brown Cloud?  Now THAT's a NEW one!   I see someone named Joyce who is a support leader on OH told you that.  I'd bet you a million dollars she's NOT a DSer, just another igorant person spreading lies about the DS.  Now you know why you have received so many negative responses.  We are sick and tired of people posting crap about the DS.

Gas?  Hmmm.   Let's see.  I only get gas when I eat pasta or sugar alcohols.

PRE OPS ...  Want a surgery that has the least chance of long-term re-gain, is BEST at curing your Diabetes (98%+), removes much of the hunger hormone Ghrelin, NO DUMPING, NO MARGINAL ULCERS and NO STOMA / STRICTURES? CURIOUS WHY I CHOSE THE DS?  VISIT MY PROFILE.

Sounds like you have some bad information.

Certain foods (for me only lots of flour) can give you gas, but not "unbearable" you can control if you pass it or not and if you get it or not by what you eat. It is not that big of a deal

Revision from RNY to DS has LOTS of "could" happens
Longer surgery
Longer Hospital
Longer time off work
Sure, after having an RNY, your stomach would need to be repaired and reattached before the DS can be performed. It is a much more complicated surgery than just a first-time DS.  For my DS I was in surgrey 4 hours, in the hospital 2 nights and off work for 3 1/2 weeks.  No scars to show for it and it was a easy recovery but I don't know what a revision might be like.

"Most" people LOVE their DS and would do it again in a heartbeat.

YES YES YES!  I can't believe I can eat like I do and be a healthy weight, I have a amazing life that I am out living instead of sitting at home wishing.

A Lot of people wish they'd never done it (because of the "brown cloud")

I have never heard of a brown cloud? If you are talking about gas see my answer above.  I have only heard of 2 people having a revision because they kept losing, a few have to work at it, most of us lose until we get to a healthy weight and then our body stops.  It is an amazing thing.  The only down side for me is having to take vitamins 5x a day but if that is the price I pay to be healthy and full of energy it seems like a pretty sweet deal to me!
