revision of DS

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone has had their DS revised because of complications of recurrent SIBO (diarrhea and gas) and or severe iron malabsorption?
Did your issues improve after revision?
Who did your revision?
Did you gain weight back?
Did your insurance cover the revision?  Even if you were self pay originally?

If you haven't had your DS revised but were looking for a Dr. in NYC to consult with about the possibility, who would you contact?
Thanks for the advice.

Lynn, I'm sorry this has continued to be a problem for you.  What a pain.  There is a Yahoo group dedicated to DS revision for those who have lost too much or have absorption issues.  I don't have a link to it but if you go to Yahoo Groups and search for DS revisions you should find it.

The only surgeon to perform revisions and that has a track record of experience in NYC is Dr. Inabnet. The other DS surgeons in NYC do not perform revisions. I am not sure about revising DS from the others DS surgeons. You would have to contact them regarding that. I know, the other DS surgeons do not do revision to DS. Sean stated that Dr Shah does do revisions to DS, but haven't met anyone in person or online who had him and wouldn't know if he does DS to DS revision. He might and you can contact him to find out.

Speak to Rodelyn at Dr Inabnet's office in regards to your medical situation and other concerns. He will perform certain tests to rule out certain conditions and factors before finalizing to perform a revised DS surgical procedure on you.

Next on my list to contact for consult would be Dr. Greenbaum in Jersey. My best to you.

The only surgeon I'd recommend for a revision in NYC would be Dr. Roslin. He does not to RNY to DS revisions, but he is well known for fixing other surgeons "problem" patients, actually that is how I found him. I was reading OH, and I came across his name in a profile by a woman who had a RNY with a surgeon in CT., she was so messed up no surgeon in the entire state of CT could fix her, she searched for a revision surgeon and Dr. Roslin was the best that she found.

Will you regain weight? Depends how the revise your surgery. Most likely they will lengthen your common channel, if they put it back to the "normal" length and for all intensive purposes eliminate your malabsorbtion, you will probably gain weight. How much will depend on how well you diet and exercise.

PS most surgeons won't revise your DS until you've been to a hemotologist about your iron and tried several different courses of treatment...same goes with your SIBO issues. Dr. Roslin is very well connected to specialists in NYC, he'll probably refer you to one or more doctors about your particular issues.

Thanks everyone.

I am set to meet a hematologist next week.  I've met with gastroenterologists left and right for SIBO and any permanent solution less than a DS revision would be incredibly welcome.

I'll let you all know what happens.

Ibanet & Roslin would be my first two choices.   Both are known to do revisions, and would not be trying to revise you to something other than a DS.

I do not personally know anyone who has had a revision, but I did read the story of one man on www.duodenalswitch.com who actually had his DS undone, due to severe health issues including multiple occurances of organs shutting down.  (His original surgeon actually had their license taken away so his was a case of surgery failure rather than DS failure).     I mention this, however, because he ended his profile by saying that he did NOT regain weight after the revision.

I, too, have severe iron malabsorption, enough that I required iron infusions to bring my levels back up.  The jury is still out on whether that will be a chronic need or a one-time thing.    Have you tried iron infusions?    What happened with them, if you did?  If you have not, you might want to investigate them.

Also - if the iron infusions do help, is the other issue severe enough that you would seek a revision on that point alone?     What have you tried, and what happens when you try it?      What's your common channel length?    I do troubleshooting for a living, so I'd be happy to help you research and see if there's a solution (or combo of solutions) that you haven't tried yet.

Be aware that not all gas-eliminating products attack the same cause, so one product may do nothing for you while a different one works wonders.   Beano, for example, is an enzyme that breaks down certain sugars to prevent gas before it starts - but it won't help after the gas already exists.   Gas-Ex on the other hand breaks down the mucus that separates one gas bubble from the next to make them easier to pass.   Flagyl is an antibiotic used to treat the "bad" bacterial overgrowth which may occur in the intestines.     Probiotics do the opposite - they help create more of the "good" bacteria which can fight the bad ones on their own.

It may also be that you need to eliminate certain foods from your diet, such as those containing lactose and/or gluten.  http://digestive-disorders.health-cares.net/malabsorption-sy mptoms.php
