albumin level

I had my DS Sept of 2007 and have managed okay except for my albumin level. I have been hospitalized several times for this and low blood pressure (50/30). My diet is not as good as it should as I don't have much of an appetite but I force myself to eat protein.

This is some scary stuff! What are the doc advising you to do? It sounds like you're not absorbing what little protein you're eating. You should be getting at least 100 grams a day and it doesn't have to all be from food. Can you get whey protein isolate blend protein powder and drinks where you are, if you're Kuwait I mean? You can order them and protein bars online through Amazon and various other outlets.

I have not been able find any of the protein powders that taste good. Do you of any that are not so powdery and leave a residue in your mouth?

Everyone's taste is so different. I like all kinds of protein powders; Champion Nutrition, Syntrax Nectar, and IDS. Some folks who don't like those have found the ones made by Labrada to be pretty good. They also make a protein bar called Rock'in Roll that is like a Payday peanut candy bar and it has 21 grams of protein in one bar. I buy everything (vitamins and protein) from www.VitaLady.com but Amazon does carry a pretty good variety as well.
To overcome the taste, you might want to try blending a protein powder with 4 oz of cool water and adding hot brewed coffee on top of the protein slurry. You can then see if you want to add a Splenda sweetener or not. Some of the powders that work well with coffee are Champion Nutrition Cocoa-Mochaccino and Chocolate, IDS Vanilla-Cinnamon and Nectar Cappuccino.

Seriously, it doesn't matter if they taste good. I haven't found a single one that tastes good to me. If you are not getting in a minimum of 120 grams of protein a day (given your deficiency), you HAVE to take it or you will die a slow, debilitating death. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Protein is a life or death issue with us.

You don't have to like it. You just HAVE to do it.

You should be getting in your protein before anything else. My surgeon shared a story of a patient of his who had not complied with protein requirements. She spent weeks and weeks in the hospital and almost did not make it. I would up my protein intake no matter how bad the shakes taste to you.

Take care,
Vanessa

Hi Beverly,
Is there a reason that your appetite is low?  I just wondered because you are about 15 months out and you should be able to get in a decent amount of protein.  Is your surgeon aware of the problem you are having getting in the protein?  I know I just found a protein supplement that tastes alright and I am five years out.  I forced them down anyway when I had to.  You may be in that situation for awhile until you get your levels up.  I know that sucks as I do not like to eat what does not taste good either.  Can you get some kind of j-tube or IV nutrition until your levels come up?  Protein is so important for us.  I wish you well in finding something that will work for you.

Two protein bullets a day (40+ grams each) plus eating all the protein you can at meals should be minimum right now, you are facing a real health threat here. You may find it easier to take the protein in a shot, faster, easier to chase with another drink if needed.

Thanks Larissa!
I have ordered the protein bullet drink and they should arrive in 2 weeks.
I'm willing to try anything.
