The latest...

I was going to try and update last night, but I was just so tired!  I zonked out pretty early on, so today it will be!

The past week has been wild - and you can read the whole thing on my blog at http://livingthedslife.wordpress.com/ - I try to update daily, sometimes it' every other day.  Anyway, suffice it to say that we started the week hoping for resolution and ended it without it.

Long story short:

my leak/fistula is still active - the stent just missed it (but is beneficial in other ways)

I'm still in the hospital - got here on the 3rd - and can't lie and say that I'm thrilled to still be here - I wanna go home!

And, the decision was made yesterday to put my stomach to rest for six weeks.  I.e., I'm NPO for the next six weeks.  They've got me on TPN to try and get my nutritional status more sound.

There is a chance they'll try and add an additional stent or reposition the one in there - if so, that would be early in the coming week.

And, there is a very real possibility that I will get discharged to home NPO with TPN by mid-week.

So, that's the scoop.

I will admit to thinking "No prob, I can do this" and then dreamed about food all night long!  LOL!

Hugs,

dina

Hey Karen,

It started after my ankle reconstruction in March.  I didn't want to take narcotics - I hate the way they make me feel, and asked to transition to ibuprofen for pain control once I was past the non-weight bearing status.  I got the go ahead, but I took too much - so much so that it caused the tissue of my stomach to degrade and two leaks and two fistulas.

There's a big huge detailed thing about it over on my blog - http://livingthedslife.wordpress.com/ - look for the "As the stomach turns" category and all of the posts related to this will be there.

My own stupid fault, long and short of it.  I just didn't pay attention to how much I was taking and it caused a very serious problem.

Blessings,

dina

Girlie, you're a strong woman to be going through all of this.  Your attitude is wonderful, I really admire that about you.

So NPO for you to get rid of this crazy issue, hoping it works quickly and you can get started on that list of foods to eat that you are dreaming of.

Big hugs,

Lori

I read your blog, and wow, my brain hurts.  You  should receive a Ph.D for all your experiences!  I am sorry for all you have been through, and I greatly admire your attitude!

So, can I conclude that use of ibuprofin is not great for bariatric patients?

I will keep you in my prayers.  I pray this is the answer, and that you will be healed after all is said and done!
Blessings to you,
Diane

Hey Diane,

Actually ibuprofen is okay - in moderation.  I buy the 600 mg tablets when I'm in Spain and without really thinking about it was popping 2 or 3 of them at a time.  With my tiny tummy maybe one would go through, and the other two would sit and degrade/damage the tissue where they sat.  I was just really stupid and didn't pay attention to (or write down) how much how often.

One of the reasons I chose the DS specificially is because I have degenerative joint disease.  I've already had my right hip replaced, my left ankle reconstructed, need both of my knees replaced, and my left hip will probably need replaced in the next year or so.  Pain is a part of my world.  I've taken ibuprofen sporatically - maybe a 600 mg every few days over the years as a post-op.  Sometimes I'd take two at bedtme if pain was really bad.  But with the ankle reconstruction the pain was so much more intense I just got lazy and popped more than I ought to have.

Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Thanks so much for the prayers!

Hugs,

dina
