Amount of Time in Surgery
Depends on a lot of things, that's why they watch you so closely to make sure you're not getting into any kind of a danger zone. In my case after the second surgery I had a little bit of kidney function problem, but they fixed that with some drugs and I was fine after a couple of days.
They really watch all your functions to make sure you're not getting into trouble. That's why the Anesthesiologist makes the big bucks, he is the one monitoring all your vitals while the surgeon is operating.

My surgeon prefers not to keep patients under anesthesia for more than 4 hours. I don't know if that applies to all patients or just overweight/obese ones. However, he utilizes a well-trained anesthesia team of an anesthesiologist and a certified nurse anesthetist for all bariatric surgeries. Both of them spent time with me in the pre-op unit.

7 1/2 hours in Surgery, and 3 hours in Recovery....But, I was an open revision, with a few prior abdominal surgeries, so lots of scar tissue.
If you are a "virgin" surgery, and Lap, it shouldn't be so long. Maybe 3-4 hours.

I owed it to myself to research the Duodenal Switch before consenting to any other weight loss surgery and so do you. Check out: DSFacts.com and DuodenalSwitch.com for more information.

I think mine was 3-4 hours. I don't remember really "waking up" for a few hours after that though. My surgery started around 2pm, and I remember listening to Obama's victory speech which was at about 11pm -- I had my surgery on election day!
And, oh, the pain! I was in terrible pain for those first few weeks. The hospital where Gagner used to work in Miami was really awful, the nurses were total *****es.
Yes, it's dangerous to be under general anesthesia for a long time, just because your body can react to it and since you're unconscious the doctors have to rely on machines to tell them what's happening. But a good anesthesiologist will get you through just fine. A good anesth. is as important as a good surgeon!

Mine was done lap. 1 hour for prep in OR and about 3.5 hours for actual surgery. Tolerated the operation real well!
My surgeon told me that my operation was one of the easiest he has ever performed in his career.
