Traveling and dealing with grief as a newly post-op.
Oh, honey, bless your heart. Just remember that it is impossible to take care of others if you don't take care of yourself first. You are no help to anyone sick, so be kind to yourself so you can be kind to others.
You'll be in my prayers!

I know that you know what you need to do, so I'm not going to go there. Just remember that it is totally OK and in fact necessary for you to take care of yourself first. You can't be there for your hubby if you haven't taken care of yourself. I would be much easier to neglect yourself and put everyone else first, in the short term. But long term, that will only harm you and then you won't be able to be there for those you love.
I am so sorry for your loss. I am swinging critters for you and your family. We are all here for you.

Thanks everyone for the kind replies and swinging critters. I certainly will take care of myself, and at least I have a good idea of what the priorities need to be, if I can't get everything in.
We will be hitting the road soon, and are going to stop at least once an hour so I can walk around. At this point, I'm thinking maybe I'll stop experimenting with the pureed foods and go back to RTD protein shakes just for a couple of days.
As always, your support is so appreciated.

Jenna,
I'm sorry for what you're going through and your loss. I have a similar (but maybe not as bad) story. I had a total hysterectomy in 2008. It was open surgery, so I was in a lot of pain post op. Less than a week after surgery my father-in-law had a very serious accident in Maine, and was in ICU not expected to make it. I had to travel to Maine (about 6 hours for me) with my husband. I was still having many post op issues from the surgery, and had very little stamina to visit him in the hospital.
I did what I could, and everyone understood. I spent a lot of time in our hotel room alone but wanted to be there for my husband. I know that was tough, and can only imagine what you will need to manage with all your med, fluids, etc.
I'm sure you will find a way to manage it and be there for your husband, as well as take care of yourself.
Again, my condolences to you and your husband.

This will be a tough time for you, but as you already know, it's imperative that you continue to take good care of yourself. Lots of fluids, and stop several times on that long drive to get up and walk and keep the circulation going (good for everyone, not just fresh post-ops).

My condolences go out to you and your family. You have a lot of good advice. All I can add is to make it easy for yourself by packing an ice chest with lots of choices of cold drinks and snacks. Easy to go items might include high protein baby foods and premade protein drinks. Take a pillow to put under your seatbelt if needed some of the time. Do stretching exercises while on the road. I am glad that you went on with your surgery.
