Thyroid meds and DS

I just had my labs done for my upcoming three month appointment and when they came back my doctor called me and told me to lower my thyroid medication.  I had been taking 250 mcg for the past 3-4 years and had been right in the middle of the normal range.  He lowered me to 100 mcg because it was being over-controlled.  I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this after there DS??

Hi Jeff

I have graves disease and take 100 Mcg and I am worried if I will absorb enough to keep my level normal.

It is amazing that at 3-months you are overcontroled.  Hum, If you learn anything about the aborption of our thyroid meds please keep me posted.  I am only 2-wks post-op right now.

Thanks for posting this question.

Even as a lap band  patient, mine was lowered after I had lost some weight. It might be a weight issue and have to re-adjust due to that..

as I am a new Post-op for DS time will tell on the malabsorb on our thyroid meds,  Most I read there was not alot of change.... I am still on the same dose I had been lowered too .

I dunno if I'm the only one who's done this, but I've dropped my thyroid pill in the sink that had a little water remaining and it swelled and crumbled apart.  I don't think it needs a lot of time to absorb.

Interesting that some people's dosage needed to be lowered.  I'll mention that to PCP when it's time to do labs. I know that too much thyroid medication can lead to osteo problems and calcium leeching and my doc likes to make sure I don't go lower than 0.3.

I just started a thyroid.... I hope that means in the near future I can be off of them!  I must have had this issue pre-op but was never treated for it.

It seems that I'm the exception here, but I've gone from .175 mcg synthroid to .300 mcg and I'm still only at "low normal".  I have autoimmune disease and a serious flare in the fall of 2009 really set me back.  BTW, keep an eye on your calcium with synthroid and thyroid disease...the meds leech calcium out of your bones.

I'm in the same boat as you. I just got my 6 month labs back and my TSH is up to 10.21. Guess that is why I am feeling so dang tired and cold! Everything else is looking pretty good except those liver enzymes from rapid weight loss.

I'm already taking .125, so I anticipate a major bump up. I emailed a copy of my labs to my endo today, so we'll see what happens.
