Is DS dangerous??
I have reported to you to OH for spouting misinformation about the DS and frightening newbies. As an OH leader *****presents OH, I hope they "fire" you. You have no business talking about the DS. I suggest that you visit www.dsfacts.com to learn about the DS before you embarrass yourself here or IRL or misinform anyone again.
I'd say the bandsters require more discipline than the DSers in that they have to be on a DIET for the rest of their lives, counting calories and such, and the DSers simply have to count yummy goodness they put in their mouths, but that is my opinion.

P.S. You are a douchebag.

I had the kick-butt duodenal switch (DS)!
HW: 344 lbs CW: 150 lbs
Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea GONE!
So you're okay with the RNY even tho you knew someone who had it removed due to rot? But yet you don't agree with something as drastic as removing part of the stomach to begin with... something sounds contradictory here.
I think you don't know enough about the DS or sleeve to speak about it properly and now you're spouting off nonsense trying to get people confused.
Won't work here as DSers and VSGers are some of the most well educated WLS folks I've met.
Now let's talk slipped bands and stomach erosions shall we?

So you're researching with a surgeon who doesn't know much about the DS himself. Now that's smart! Being a leader and saying things that are NOT true is extremely irresponsible of you. How could you carry a shred of dignity? The correct answer would be that you don't know much of it and suggest more research, or how about just listening or asking for resources yourself and take a moment to open your own mind?
I, too, am a teacher, and have never EVER had what you call such an embarrassing moment needing to run out of class. If you'd done any research beyond your surgeon's limited information, you would understand why. Mortality rate is the same as RNY anymore and you'd know that too if you'd lifted a finger before spouting out your pie hole.
The stomach portion removed leaves behind all working parts to operate the way nature intended, including the parts liable to atrophy from non use wth the RNY, not being able to be rejuvenated if the stomach were to attempt to be restored.
The only thing I can agree with you about is that the DS is not for everyone, but who the hell are you to make that determination about people?
Now, if you really want to be a wls group leader that is open to those seeking different types of wls, you need to either pull your head out of you ass and be a responsible leader, or STFU about what you don't know about.

I'm not going to sugar coat it, any weight loss surgery can have bad results. The percentage of this happening can be kept small by going to a good surgeon, being educated on your after surgery nutritional needs and being your own advocate for blood tests, medical assistance, dietary needs, and FOLLOW THROUGH.
The DS is more complicated then some surgeries so it takes more training. And until the market (us) demand the surgery, the doctors and insurance companies are not going to change the status quo.

I would be surprised if your WLS support group leader has ever personally known anyone who got the DS.
Who is going to order your labs after your surgery? Do you have a doctor at home who is on board with the DS? You have to be dedicated to lifelong diligence concerning lab testing to stay on top of your vitamin levels. If you haven't yet found a doctor willing to do this, you've still got some research to do. We're not talking about just CBC, but at least 15 different lab tests.
People are afraid of the unknown. Everyone has heard of someone dying from complications of WLS. What people forget about is the way longer list of people in the obituaries every day who die of complications of being overweight.
I didn't tell my extended family before my DS. I only told my children. It was no one else's business, and I didn't need anyone's unwelcome opinions about my personal decision. I am "blessed" with more than afew extended family members who think they know what is best for me. Up at the top of the list of those people is one person whose advice to me about weight loss was to "pray harder", and to "learn how to pray correctly" (through her religion, not mine) to achieve successful weight loss. Special people like that don't deserve to be "in the loop".

Please click back over and read my response to Major Mom about my concern for Emily.
Emily will be seeing my PCP (who she's now chosen as her own) when she gets home. I do feel better about that. She, the PCP, is up on the surgical procedures and I trust her judgement and I know Emily will be well taken care of.
And I do know someone who had the DS. She's doing wonderfully well. I do know people who have died from WLS but not from the DS.
Just, please, understand that I was concerned Emily hadn't done enough homework and is looking for a fast weight loss. I just want her to have any more disappointments on this journey than she's already had.

You. Are. Not. Her. Mother. She is a grown woman. Knock it off. You are worrying about uncertainties just to worry about uncertainties. She could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Are you going to worry about that? Actually, her risks statistically are higher that she WILL get hit by a bus.
Emily's been a member of OH since 2008. She's been over here asking question after question. I think she's done her homework. So you can just butt out now. Bye!

Really? You are worried about someone else not doing enough homework when it's obvious that you have no idea what's going on yourself! Seriously, this makes me glad that I did my own and research and compared facts and didn't take the word of PCP's or "support group leaders" as the word of truth! In your position, I am embarrassed for your lack knowledge.
